An Oswego councilor suggested the city start looking now at what to do with several parking spaces currently leased by the college. The spots are north of Washington Boulevard on Sixth Avenue. They will revert back to the city Jan. 1, 2016 and will be a potential revenue source, he added.
Oswego County Public Health Director Jiancheng Huang told the Oswego County Legislature’s Health Committee today (Oct. 29) that several county agencies are working closely with the county health department to develop procedures and precautionary plans in response to the Ebola virus. “I want to stress that we have no information about anyone in Oswego County who has or may have the disease. That being said, we are working with relevant county departments and agencies to coordinate a preparedness response to the Ebola virus.”
Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman today (Oct. 28) announced felony charges against an Oswego County husband and wife accused of abusing power of attorney to steal from an 84-year-old woman in their care. David Tetro Jr. and Morgan Tetro, both of Minetto, allegedly stole more than $200,000 of the victim’s money for their personal use, including more than $100,000 in gambling debts, purchases at Victoria’s Secret and assorted transactions on iTunes, Ebay and Facebook.
The Oswego County Salvation Army will kick off its ‘Red Kettle’ campaign on Nov. 13 at 6:45 p.m., prior to the Oswego County Legislature meeting at the County Office Building, 46 E. Bridge St. The public is invited to attend the kick-off in support of the ‘Red Kettle’ campaign.
The Oswego County Emergency Management Office announces that the system of emergency notification sirens surrounding the three nuclear power plants at Nine Mile Point will be tested during the week of Nov. 3 through 7. Each of the 37 individual sirens will be tested between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. between Nov. 3 and 6. The testing on Nov. 7 will include a full-scale simultaneous activation of all 37 sirens for three to five minutes.
Standing at the Port of Oswego Marina today (Oct. 27), U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand urged Congress to pass new legislation to ban plastic microbeads in personal care products. There are many other safer options that can be used instead of microbeads, she said. These products are designed to be rinsed down the drain. However, the microbeads are too small to be captured by wastewater treatment plants, she added.
They are subsequently found in large bodies of water, such as the Great Lakes, where they concentrate toxins and can be ingested by birds and fish, posing serious environmental and health risks.
By making small adjustments to costume and decoration choices on Halloween, danger and risk to public safety is easily decreased. “It is important for people to take basic precautions to make sure they have nothing other than a fun-filled Halloween,” said Oswego Fire Department Chief Jeff McCrobie.
Several Oswego DPW workers and dozens of Novelis employees gave up their Saturday to help rebuild the playground in Washington Square (East Park). Not only have they added new and safer equipment but three new flower beds were also added to the park. “It’s going to look really nice when it’s done,” Councilor Eric VanBuren said. “It’s a big change; a big change from what it was.”
An Oswego County jury today (Oct. 23) convicted Richard M. Switts, 40, of Mexico, of six counts second-degree criminal sexual act (Class D violent felony); two counts of second-degree sexual abuse (Class A Misdemeanor); and three counts of third-degree sexual abuse (Class B misdemeanor).
This weekend, volunteers will start fixing up an east side city playground that has been closed due to unsafe conditions. At a special Common Council meeting Thursday, the city paved the way to reopening the city’s playground area located at Fitzhugh Park Elementary School in the near future.
