SUNY Oswego’s School of Business appears on Princeton Review’s 2015 list of “The Best 296 Business Schools,” an annual distinction of more than a decade’s standing. “External validation, whether from Princeton Review or U.S. News, affirms the quality of our business programs,” said Richard Skolnik, dean of the business school.
The 1976 SUNY Oswego grad returned to the college on Thursday to do live broadcasts for the Today Show. The college’s TV station is named in his honor. He did some broadcasts from there, but most were shown live from the front entrance way of the Campus Center – surrounded by hundreds of students and others who flocked to the college to be part of the event.
The Friends of Fort Ontario, Central New York Ghost Hunters, and other ghost-hunting groups return to the Fort Ontario State Historic Site, 1 E. Fourth St., to host Ghost Tours October 17 and 18. Guided tours run in 15-minute increments from 7 to 10 both evenings.
Councilors decided Tuesday night to forgo a previous purchase offer and put the site up for sale for sale for its fair market value pursuant to the policy and procedures of the city of Oswego for foreclosed property disposition.
Phoenix Central School graduates will soon have a new opportunity to assist with college costs thanks to a large scholarship fund recently established by an alumna of the district. After the March 2014 passing of Roberta Hurd, a graduate of the Class of 1939, the Robert and Roberta Hurd Scholarship Fund was established with a bequest gift to the Central New York Community Foundation – totaling upwards of $1 million.
In an effort to improve safety and security at local schools, State Senator Patty Ritchie has announced nearly $70,000 in special funding to be distributed to districts throughout Central and Northern New York. “When children are in the classroom and when teachers are leading lessons, the focus should be on learning, not whether or not they are safe and out of harm’s way,” said Senator Ritchie.
The Acting Company has chosen SUNY Oswego as one of four lead institutions to participate in a new national performance and education initiative made up of colleges and universities, high schools and community organizations. Under the lead of SUNY Oswego, Arizona State University, Towson University and University of Missouri-Kansas City, each consortium will offer professional development opportunities with playwrights, actors, designers, directors and educators over the next three years.
October is national Domestic Violence Awareness Month. New York State has designated Wednesday (Oct. 15) “Wear Purple Day” so New Yorkers can show their support in ending domestic violence. Community members are invited to wear purple and join the group Wednesday in front of the Department of Social Services Building at 100 Spring St, Mexico, at 10 a.m.
The Oswego County Department of Motor Vehicles and County Records Center on East River Road will remain open for business over the next several weeks as contractors begin the demolition of the old Oswego County jail. County Clerk Michael C. Backus said parking spots on the north side of the “old jail” building will be restricted while the building is being demolished. The demolition project is expected to begin Oct. 20 and continue through late November.
“There is some exciting news at the Fulton campus. There are some great things happening there,” CCC Interim President Gregory DeCinque told members of the Oswego County Legislature Thursday afternoon. They are forming several community partnerships he pointed out. Some of their partners include the YMCA, BOCES and the city of Fulton. “It reduces duplication. It allows us to partner with mission appropriate organizations and some very, very good things are starting to happen,” DeCinque said.
