New York Sea Grant has announced the publication of Dogs and Harmful Algal Blooms. Harmful algal blooms, especially in the state’s fresh water, are overgrowths of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) that cause water quality problems in lakes and ponds, including the occasional production of potent toxins. These toxins can poison people, household pets, waterfowl and livestock.
For this year’s campaign, they are focusing on three of the county’s most pressing issues, ending hunger, the success of children and youth, and the overall well being of families. “United Way is all about results. It is inspiring to see the remarkable ways in which the United Way of Greater Oswego County utilizes donors’ dollars to support programs that produce measurable results by providing services that provide comfort, support and empowerment to those in need,” said Bill Crist, board president.
U.S. News Media Group counts SUNY Oswego among the top 15 public regional universities in the North for 2015 in rankings released Sept. 9. The college advanced 13 places — to No. 56 — on the overall list of public and private regional universities in the North. Oswego is No. 14 on the U.S. News accounting of the best public institutions in the Northern region this round, up from No. 16 previously.
On Tuesday afternoon, the Oswego Fire Department was dispatched to a vehicle fire at 101 West Utica Street. The minivan sustained heavy damage to the engine compartment and an office building received minor smoke damage. No injuries were reported.
The Oswego County Health Department reported that the Eastern equine encephalitis virus has been found in ten new mosquito samples collected last week. Five of the samples were taken from West Monroe’s Toad Harbor Big Bay Swamp area, two near the village of Central Square, two from the town of New Haven, and one near NYS Route 104 in the town of Albion. The West Nile Virus has been found in one mosquito sample collected near the village of Central Square.
SUNY Oswego’s 28th annual ALANA Student Leadership Conference multicultural celebration Sept. 18-24 will feature performances, presenters, a peace walk through the city of Oswego and a mini-carnival highlighting festivals from across the globe. A collaboration of student organizations under the banner African, Latino, Asian and Native American organization, the ALANA team this year chose “Carnivals and Festivals” as a theme to celebrate all cultures, whether minority or not.
The mayor said he created the city of Oswego Promotion and Tourism Advisory Board to promote city activities and showcase Oswego’s rich culture and history. The Common Council sailed through a relatively light agenda in about 15 minutes Monday night.

The Greater Oswego-Fulton Chamber of Commerce will host a Pumpkin Carving Contest during this year’s CNY Great Pumpkin Festival to be held October 4 and 5 in Oswego’s Washington Square Park. Planning committee members have their sights set at breaking the official record for the most lit jack-o-lanterns in one location. That record, which is currently held by the Keene, NH, Pumpkin Festival, is a total 30,581 jack-o-lanterns.

To celebrate the rich bounty of local food Oswego County produces Cornell Cooperative Extension of Oswego County is holding the fifth annual Oswego County Harvest Dinner. The popular event will this year take place on October 3 at The American Foundry.
Thanks to the Make A Wish Foundation and dozens of local volunteers and supporters, four-year-old Sadie Wilson and her twin sister, Layla, will be headed to Disney World in a couple of months. The girls were surprised by the announcement on Sunday at a special ceremony at the Kingsford House.
