The H. Lee White Marine Museum is excited to announce the launch of the “Love Our Lighthouse” campaign, with the goal of raising the necessary funds to complete the restoration project that has already begun of the West Pierhead Lighthouse. Aerial spraying of the Toad Harbor / Big Bay Swamp area near the north shore of Oneida Lake is postponed tonight, Saturday, August 30, due to uncertain weather. The forecast indicates varied conditions, such as rain and wind speeds, that would hamper spraying efforts. Weather permitting, aerial spraying will take place Tuesday, September 2.
After a windstorm devastated the big screen at the historic Midway Drive In Theatre and an outpouring of support from the community to rebuild, a new screen as big as the old one was erected this week and Friday (Aug. 29) night was lit with moving picture shows.
UPDATE: As of 8:30 p.m. Friday, August 29 – the Route 11 bridge over the Oneida River in Brewerton has been re-opened to traffic in both directions, with a 20 ton weight restriction. New York State’s emergency bridge repair contractor was onsite at the state Route 11 Bridge in Brewerton Friday (Aug. 29) assessing the work needed after the Department of Transportation declared the structure unsafe for vehicle traffic yesterday.

A city resident says the city is wasting money blocking off parking at property owned by his sister and her husband. The council points out the barricades are in place for safety reasons, to discourage college students, and others, from illegally parking in the area. There are so many cars there that it blocks access for residents who need to get to their property, one councilor pointed out.
Nearly 2,200 new students — more than 1 in 4 from traditionally underrepresented groups and the most in history from outside Central New York — started classes this fall at SUNY Oswego. About 1,420 freshmen and 750 transfer students enrolled, a large class but a bit fewer than last year’s boom of just more than 1,500 freshmen and nearly 800 transfers, according to SUNY Oswego Admissions Director Dan Griffin.
State Police in Fulton are investigating a fatal car/pedestrian accident that occurred around 1 p.m.on Thursday (Aug. 28), on County Route 57 in the town of Volney. The victim reportedly ran out in front of a vehicle.
