CNY Great Pumpkin Festival seeks record setting Pumpkin Carving Contest

Feeling artistic? The Greater Oswego-Fulton Chamber of Commerce will host a Pumpkin Carving Contest during this year’s CNY Great Pumpkin Festival to be held October 4 and 5 in Oswego’s Washington Square Park. Planning committee members have their sights set at breaking the official record for the most lit jack-o-lanterns in one location. That record, which is currently held by the Keene, NH, Pumpkin Festival, is a total 30,581 jack-o-lanterns.

Kites Soar At Fort Ontario

The skies over historic Fort Ontario were filled with rain – and kites on Saturday. Several people, young and old, braved the elements to take part in the annual kite fest event. Members of the New York Kite Enthusiasts (NYKE), said Fort Ontario is perhaps the best place in the state to fly a kite, except Saturday.
Bill Coons, a NYKE member from Schenectady, agreed the grounds at Fort Ontario is one of the best place in the state for kite flying. But, Saturday’s winds were a bit too strong at times, he admitted.

Police: Man Charged After Search Warrant Results In Recovery Of Heroin

A search warrant executed on a vehicle occupied by Randy Frederick Ormsby, 57, of the town of Volney, lead to the discovery of ten envelopes of suspected heroin, according to the Oswego County Drug Task Force. Ormsby has been charged in the Town of Volney Court with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the Third degree, class B Felony. It is alleged that Ormsby possessed the heroin with the intent to sell it.

Oswego Man Hit By Car, Hospitalized

At about 6:41 p.m. Friday (Sept. 5), the city of Oswego Police Department was dispatched to the area of East Fourth Street and East Utica Street for a vehicle/pedestrian motor vehicle accident. Michael H. Plunkett Jr. was transported to Upstate Hospital, Syracuse, by Menter Ambulance, with non-life threatening injuries, according to police. The driver was ticketed for failing to yield the right of way.

Horse Dies of EEE in Oswego County

A second horse in southern Oswego County has died of the Eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) virus, the Oswego County Health Department reported today. The horse, which was stabled on Gristwood Road in the southern portion of the town of Palermo, died Aug. 27. Jiancheng Huang, Oswego County Public Health Director, said horses are very susceptible to EEE if they are not vaccinated. A horse in the town of Schroeppel died of EEE earlier in August.

Ritchie Delivers $100,000 For Transportation Improvements In CNY

Senator Patty Ritchie has announced she has secured $100,000 in special funding to improve transportation in Oswego County by replacing culverts in the towns of Hannibal and West Monroe. “Doing things like replacing culverts and repairing roads helps to improve our local communities by making transportation more efficient and safer for local residents,” she said. “I’m pleased to be able to provide this funding, which will allow the Towns of Hannibal and West Monroe manage the costs associated with making necessary improvements to their roadways.”

Executive Director of the United Way of Greater Oswego County, Melanie Trexler has announced that Bill Crist, superintendent of Schools for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Syracuse, will officially take over the reins as president of the agency’s board of directors at the United Way’s 2014 / 2015 Kickoff Breakfast, September 10, at the American Foundry. Crist follows out-going United Way Board President Kathy Fenlon.
