At its meeting this week, the Common Council approved dedication of the street between City Hall and Pathfinder Bank as “John M. Canale Drive.” Canale has spent nearly three-quarters of his life as a teacher and was also a city alderman for more than two decades.
A horse in southern Oswego County has died of the Eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) virus, the Oswego County Health Department reported today (Aug. 15). The horse had been stabled near an area known to harbor the EEE virus in Oswego and Onondaga counties, and was probably exposed to EEE in late July, prior to the aerial spraying of the Toad Harbor – Three Mile Bay Wild Management Area.

Shipments of aluminum products through the St. Lawrence Seaway to the Port of Oswego are expected to increase by 30 percent this year due to strong demand from aluminum sheet manufacturers catering to the automotive industry. The Port of Oswego is experiencing record levels of aluminum shipments and is forecasting that more than 120,000 metric tons will be delivered to the port in 2014.

17-year-old Anna-Rose Shove’s death has been determined to have been due to drowning, according to the Onondaga County Medical Examiner. The manner of death is pending further investigation. Troopers are interested in anyone who may have seen the victim Sunday afternoon; particularly one man who was seen speaking with several women along the beach.
At its meeting Tuesday night, the Oswego School Board accepted the resignation of two principals and appointed another to replace a recently retired principal.
The Fulton City School District , in partnership with its Community Schools Initiative Grant Partners, will host a Community School Kickoff Carnival on August 19 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Fulton Junior High School. Governor Andrew Cuomo launched the Community Schools initiative as a way to transform schools in distressed communities into hubs for a wide range of support services for children and their families.
