Sixth graders Alyssa Searor and Maddy Graham wanted to do something for a good cause and both enjoyed crafting. Alyssa said, “I was making lots of loom bracelets and Mrs. Haessig thought it might be a way of helping others.” Meanwhile, Maddy noted, “We thought it would be nice to have a fundraiser for Oswego Oncology and the Galisano Children’s Hospital and we are doing that through making crafts.”
This year’s Bug Run will be held on June 14, at the Home of the Comets’, Hazzy’s Tavern, in beautiful, scenic, downtown New Haven.
The north end of East Fourth Street is steeped in history. The area is home to Fort Ontario and the Safe Haven Museum. On Tuesday afternoon, some new history was added to the mix. In a brief ceremony, witnessed by nearly two dozen people, Oswego Mayor Tom Gillen officially dedicated the stretch of roadway as Barbara Donahue Drive.
At about 12:45 a.m. today (June 10), the Oswego City Police Department’s Anti-Crime Team executed a search warrant at 24 Ontario St., second floor apartment, in the city of Oswego, relative an investigation into the alleged crack cocaine sales being perpetrated at that location. A Syracuse man and an Oswego woman were arrested as a result.
The council approved closing West First Street between West Bridge and Oneida streets on Sunday afternoons from June 15 to August 31 for the “Mugs and Motors” social event. It will bring all types of vehicles and business to downtown Oswego on a day that is usually not that busy, according the event organizer Anne Backer. It was also announced that the council and committee meetings are now available for viewing on the day following the meeting date.
State Senator Patty Ritchie announced that her legislation to help find a vaccine to prevent the deadly EEE disease has passed the State Senate. “The loss of our Maggie Sue (to EEE) was the most devastating experience of our lives and we struggle with that on a daily basis; in part because we strive to find the very difficult balance in protecting our other children from EEE and in learning how to educate them without making them afraid to go outside and be carefree children,” said Donna Wilcox, Maggie Sue’s aunt.
At 12:45 a.m. today (June 9), Oswego Fire Department crews were dispatched to a two-car motor vehicle collision on State Route 481 near the intersection of Woodridge Terrace. OFD Deputy Chief Dave Engle reported that the two vehicles were involved in a head-on collision and two people were injured in the accident. Their injuries are thought to be non-life threatening.
Under the direction of Tourist Center Coordinator Arlene Johnson, RSVP volunteers staff the center daily from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. To volunteer for a morning or afternoon shift, prospective volunteers may visit Johnson during her shift on Friday afternoons, or call RSVP telephone coordinator Joan Osypiewski at 343-8551 to inquire about openings.
Oswego Paddlefest’s Rock the Locks event will rock a little longer this year as organizers invited the city of Fulton to join its event, adding a new 10-mile course designation to the Oswego River route.
The city of Oswego has dozens of vacant structures, and some are causing concerns for residents and firefighters. Some of these vacant houses and buildings are very well maintained and safely secured by property managers or owners, while other vacant structures are dilapidated and hazardous to those in the immediate area. Vacant structures can put first responders at risk.
