Following the British victory at Oswego on May 6, 1814, the Royal Navy fleet under Commodore James Yeo controlled Lake Ontario and blockaded Commodore Isaac Chauncey’s U.S. Navy fleet in Sackets Harbor, NY.
For decades, police officers throughout Oswego County have participated in the annual “Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics.” On Tuesday, officers representing the cities of Fulton and Oswego, the county and others carried on the tradition. The runs are designed to focus attention on the Special Olympics.
On May 12, the Common Council voted to authorize the city chamberlain to itemize the overtime costs to the city associated with the Bridge Street Run and bill SUNY Oswego. However, shortly thereafter, Mayor Tom Gillen vetoed the resolution. On Tuesday night, he delivered his veto message to the council.
A 9:58 p.m. Monday, Oswego Fire Department crews were dispatched to a reported structure fire at 144 W. Seneca St., in the city. Firefighters arrived minutes later and found smoke billowing from the basement and an active fire near the main electrical service of the two-family home.

On Aug. 5, 1944, 982 refugees who survived Nazi reign during World War II arrived at Fort Ontario in Oswego. They were allowed into the country as “guests” of President Franklin D. Roosevelt.
Memorial Day is sacred to all veterans and families of veterans, according to George Hoffman, the master of ceremonies. “We owe it to our fallen heroes to pause from our routine so that we may respectfully honor their lives and sacrifices for liberty and freedom,” he said. “Our defenders are ordinary Americans performing extraordinary deeds,” he added.
State Police in Fulton are investigating a one-vehicle, fatal motor vehicle collision that occurred on Sunday (May 25) at approximately 8:11p.m. The collision occurred on Hall Road in the town of Oswego, approximately one half mile east of Chapel Road.

For the past year, the senator has pushed members of the conference committee that were drafting the final bill language to include these provisions in the bill. Schumer explained that the inclusion of these two provisions is a major victory for all of Upstate New York because it will prioritize dredging projects in Buffalo, Rochester and Oswego over the long-term that will make those harbors easier to navigate, and it will help make dams – and the communities near them – safer.
“With the bulk of business that we already have under our belt, if you will, we were able now to give the workforce a five-year picture to what the rates and benefits are going to look like through the end of 2019,” the Oswego plant manager said. “In that we can confirm what their annual pay raise is going to be starting the first of January next year. They’re going to get a three percent pay raise through the end of 2019, each year.”
