On Monday (April 14), Tony Spada, president and CEO of AAA Western and Central New York presented Oswego Mayor Thomas Gillen, Oswego Police Chief Tory DeCaire and Oswego Police Lieutenant Charles Searor with their second Gold Award for their success in the in AAA’s Community Traffic Safety Program.
The sixth annual “Shoot for the Stars” 3-on-3 wheelchair basketball tournament will again feature the Heroes Game between the Oswego Firefighters and Police on April 26 at Leighton Elementary School. Organized by Greg Callen, founder of Move Along Inc., the tournament raises money to put toward the purchase of wheelchairs and other equipment needed to supply various disabled sports programs.
Veteran continuing education administrator Jill Pippin has joined SUNY Oswego as dean of extended learning. Oswego’s Division of Extended Learning serves a wide array of part-time students and working adults interested in pursuing degrees, career-specific coursework and professional development opportunities in Oswego, Syracuse and Phoenix and online.
At this week’s meeting, the Common Council OK’d expenditure of funds from the Softball Accounting Reserve Fund. The DPW commissioner was authorized to spend up to $20,000 to operate Legends Softball Complex for the 2014 season. They also approved transfer of funds from within the Department of Public Works. A total of $8,000 was moved to cover the anticipated cost of seasonal employees at the softball complex.
University Police at SUNY Oswego will have special patrols out looking for motorists who are not wearing their seatbelts from April 21 to May 4. The patrols are part of the nationwide “Buckle-Up Day and Night” campaign. The larger campaign is traditionally scheduled in late May, but University Police is granted a variation to run earlier because of college graduation in May.
Earth Week, organized by the Oswego County Environmental Management Council, will take place from April 25 to May 4. The Environmental Management Council has organized events citizens can participate in during the week. The EMC also highly encourages citizens to host environmental cleanup events of their own.
The onset of spring brings thoughts of making home improvements and repairs, “But, watch out for dishonest home repair firms,” warns Oswego County Sheriff, Reuel A. Todd.
Oswego County Clerk Michael C. Backus will visit Russia for 12 days in May as part of an international exchange program organized by the American Council of Young Political Leaders and sponsored by the US State Department, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. He plans to share information about Oswego County fishing and manufacturing, along with state tourism opportunities like the Baseball Hall of Fame. SUNY Oswego, Le Moyne College and Syracuse University will also be topics of discussion.
The original law was challenged more than a year ago. The council has since had the state of New York go through the legislation and made it legal; so the local language is consistent with state statue and other law. It now will regulate taxi cabs, taxi cab drivers, will require individuals to submit to a host of questions regarding their background, according to the council president.
Governor Andrew Cuomo announced today (April 14) that Felix Schoeller, a German-based global producer of specialty paper, has successfully negotiated a new contract with a major manufacturing company, resulting in the relocation of a paper conversion operation from out of state to the existing facility in Pulaski. The expansion project doubles the Pulaski facility output, and has retained and created 290 full-time and contract positions.
