The Oswego City Police Department is asking for the public’s assistance in locating a reportedly missing person. Charles J. Rice was last seen during the early morning hours of Friday April 4 at a relative’s home within the city of Oswego. He is approximately 6 feet tall and weighs 190 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes.
The event, held Saturday, at Wright’s Landing boat launch, attracted more than 125 “plungers” of all ages. Funds raised by the freezing fundraiser will benefit the Special Olympics. Three teenagers accused of killing a town of Granby man were indicted by a Grand Jury on felony charges of murder, robbery and burglary. The secret Grand Jury proceedings were revealed when three separate indictments were filed with the Oswego County court clerk containing 19 counts and 25 felony charges against the young men.
Motorists are reminded that the month of April is National Distracted Driver Awareness month. Members of the Oswego Police Department will be out educating and warning motorist of the danger of distracted driving. April 10-15, law enforcement personnel will be using a combination of traditional and innovative strategies to crack down on motorists who text while driving.
The Oswego County Legislature’s Public Safety and Finance and Personnel committees have approved a budget modification request from Oswego County Sheriff Reuel A. Todd to cover the cost of housing inmates out-of-county. In the first two months of the year, this expense amounted to $130,000 which exhausted the adopted 2014 budget amount of $100,000.
The New Haven teenager was kidnapped on April 3, 1994. A huge crowd packed the New Haven Fire Hall on Thursday night to share stories and keep hope alive that some day the mystery of ‘Where is Heidi” will be solved. Pastor Vivian Summerville, the same pastor who led the vigils in 1994 and 1995, led prayers Thursday.
More than 100 participants are signed up for the second annual Plunge for Special Olympics New York and will take an icy dip into Ontario Lake on Saturday in support of local area Special Olympics athletes. Sergeant Jim Cunningham, officers Lysa Dolin, Bryan Thompson and Kevin Engle of the Oswego Police Department will lead the plunge carrying the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics “Flame of Hope.”
The average temperature for March 2014 was 27.0 degrees. That is 6.9 degrees below average. “It was cold. But it only ended up in a three-way tie for the 15th coldest March in Oswego (going back to 1855),” according to Bill Gregway, local observer for the National Weather Service.
Camp Hollis, located at 40 Health Camp Road on the Lake Ontario shoreline in the town of Oswego, has been owned and operated by Oswego County since July 1946. The camp serves hundreds of children each summer. The Youth Bureau is currently looking for new campers as well as staff.
State Police in Fulton were contacted on Monday (3/31/14) by the town of Volney Fire Chief regarding a suspicious vehicle. This investigation resulted in the arrest of 40-year-old Christopher A. Hughes from Mexico. Hughes was charged with 1 count of Criminal Impersonation in the 2nd Degree, a class “A” misdemeanor.
