More than three dozen area residents got to discuss what was on their minds with U.S. Representative Dan Maffei Friday afternoon at the Oswego Public Library. The majority of concerns focus on jobs and the economy, he said.

Members of Recognizing Oswego County met on January 9 to regroup and re-energize for 2014. The group expects the new year to bring great news of people and organizations doing wonderful work in Oswego County to promote the health and wellness of children, families and adults. Recognizing Oswego County focuses on the positive efforts that are being made in the community.

SUNY Oswego President Deborah F. Stanley announced today (Jan. 17) that the college has received the largest single gift in its 153-year history: a $7.5 million gift from the estate of Oswego County resident Lorraine E. Marano, an education enthusiast.

The Oswego Boxing Club is located at 177 W. First St. and offers more than just boxing. It provides a venue to work out and get fit. And, it also stresses the importance of a good education, according to the co-owners. Classes are offered to men and women of just about any age.

The H. Lee White Maritime Museum is celebrating the 80th anniversary of the opening of the Oswego West Pierhead Lighthouse this year. A Lighthouse Events Committee has been formed to work on several activities. The Museum Lighthouse Committee will be holding a planning meeting on January 26 at 2:30 p.m. Interested members of the community are invited to attend this meeting.

Oswego County Public Health Director Jiancheng Huang advises residents and property owners near North and South Sandy Ponds to be aware of signs of flood damage to septic systems, wells, and homes. General information on what to do during and following a severe weather event or power outage, and how to prepare for severe weather events and power outages, is contained in the NYS Department of Health’s publication “Don’t Be Left in the Dark.”

Flood waters in the Town of Sandy Creek west of Route 3 along the shoreline of Lake Ontario are beginning to recede today (Jan. 15), town officials reported, but people in the area should continue to use caution and follow flood safety tips. The water has receded about 8 inches overnight following flooding that occurred along North Pond in the Town of Sandy Creek.

A seized elevator motor unit, heavy smoke, and high heat conditions at 200 Water Street along with burnt food smoking at a West Seventh Street residence kept firefighters busy Tuesday night. No injuries were reported at either scene.

U.S. Representative Dan Maffei announced he will host a “Discuss it with Dan” mobile office hours event on Friday from 3 to 4:30 p.m. in the Oswego Public Library Community Room, 120 E. Second St.
