The measure, which was named after a 10th Mountain Division officer from Evans Mills who was killed earlier this year in Afghanistan, would provide that every family of a fallen service member be given US and New York State flags that flew over the State Capitol at half-staff in their honor.
UPDATE: Search efforts for the downed drone will resume Wednesday morning. The crash site is about 20 miles northeast of the city of Oswego. The MQ-9 Reaper crashed into the lake during a routine training mission.
Dozens turned out to brave the chilly weather Monday to pay tribute to Oswego’s veterans – past and present. A new monument has been added to those at Veterans’ Memorial Park. The new memorial honors those who served in Operation Enduring Freedom / Operation Iraqi Freedom.
The wartime memories of 31 World War II veterans from Oswego, Jefferson and St. Lawrence counties, who served aboard Navy ships and battled cold and disease as well as enemy fighters as front line infantry and marines, are being added to the state’s permanent archives through Senator Patty Ritchie’s “Veteran’s Voices” program.
Holy Trinity Parish out-spelled seven other teams to win the 2013 Trinity Catholic School Community Adult Spelling Bee crown. The popular annual event is a fundraiser for the county’s only Catholic school.
Marta Jean Nolen, 31, of Hannibal, and Matthew Alan Merrill, 28, of Fulton, were arrested this week following a joint investigation by the Oswego County Drug Task Force, the Fulton City Police Department, and the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Department. A search warrant was conducted on March 20, 2013, and resulted in the recovery of a large amount of heroin.
Award winning performances and evaluations have become a tradition for the staff of the Oswego High School Buccaneer Bulletin. Once again, the Buccaneer Bulletin received a gold medal for being the best all around school newspaper in New York State. Each fall, the students and advisors joined with other scholastic journalists and photographers for the annual Empire State School Press Association gathering at Syracuse University.
The second public hearing regarding the proposed Renaissance Charter School drew a small gathering Thursday afternoon in the second floor conference room at the Oswego Education Center. Two of the three speakers were in favor of moving forward to provide an alternative to public schools. The district’s interim superintendent pointed out that studies have shown that charter schools’ achievement is “indistinguishable” from that of traditional public schools. Nationally, he added, charter schools have a dismal record of success.
State Police in Pulaski are investigating a reported strong-arm robbery that occurred on Tuesday at approximately 10:30 p.m. along Salisbury Street near the I-81 overpass, in the village of Sandy Creek. Anyone who may have been in the area or witnessed any suspicious activity is asked to contact State Police in Pulaski.
The new mini-series titled “The Run,” which aired for the first time this summer on the Sportsman Channel, is now up for four Sportsman Choice Awards. The 2013 Sportsman Choice Awards are voted by the viewers and run through Dec. 1. The four awards up for nomination include best fishing show, best educational/instructional show, best host (local cast), and best new series.
