The Oswego Common Council has agreed on a budget proposal for 2016. The council will present a budget with a 1.6 percent tax hike later this month. That’s 1.6 “pending proofing,” the city chamberlain explained following Saturday’s marathon budget workshop.
SUNY Oswego’s enrollment of about 1,500 first-year students for the fall semester will approach and possibly surpass 2013’s class of first-year students — the largest since 1988 — and establish a new high-water mark in ethnic diversity. “It’s an exciting time. These are changing times at SUNY Oswego, geographically, when you look at the diversity and when you look at areas of interest academically,” said Admissions Director Dan Griffin.
Aerial spraying of the Toad Harbor – Big Bay Swamp area in Oswego County is cancelled this evening, Friday, Aug. 14, due to weather conditions. Weather permitting, aerial spraying will take place Sunday, Aug. 16, between 6 and 9 p.m.
Mayor Tom Gillen appointed Ellen B. Clark, concierge with experience Oswego NY and co-founder of Lighthouse Coworks, as chair of Oswego’s Promotion and Tourism Advisory Board. Clark, a charter member of the board, is a native of Oswego and graduate of Cornell University.
A sample of mosquitoes recently collected in the north-central area of the town of Palermo has tested positive for the Eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) virus, the Oswego County Health Department reported today. EEE was also found in three additional samples of mosquitoes collected from Toad Harbor Swamp. The West Nile virus was found near the county health department’s mosquito monitoring field station in West Monroe, marking the first confirmed presence of West Nile virus this summer in Oswego County.
On Wednesday, August 12, at approximately 4:29 p.m., investigators with the Oswego County Drug Task Force, pursuant to a drug investigation, stopped a 2012 Ford Focus in the driveway of 184 W. Utica St. Also on Wednesday, at approximately 6:15 p.m., investigators with the Oswego County Drug Task Force, with the assistance of the Oswego City Police Department’s Special Response Team, executed a narcotics related search warrant at 4 ½ Governor St. Two arrests resulted.
Algoma Central’s Capt. Henry Jackman unloaded a six-story road salt cone in Oswego on Wednesday Aug. 12. Launched in 1981 as the Lake Wabush, Capt. Henry Jackman was one of three vessels acquired by Algoma Central Corp., Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., from Hanna Mining on March 27, 1986.
Oswego Mayor Tom Gillen has announced that after issuing a request on July 29 for residents to continue to conserve water usage for the next few weeks, the situation has improved and residents may now resume regular water usage.
The arrest stems from the investigation into incidents that occurred at a village of Central Square residence where he engaged in acts of sexual intercourse with the victim who was less than 13 years of age between October 2010 and June 2013, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
Apparently the lure of the breakwall on a warm summer’s day is just too much to resist. It’s a hat trick. For the third time in about a week, the Oswego Fire Department was dispatched and Marine One headed out to the Oswego breakwall for a report of several people in distress. Shortly after 5 p.m. today (Aug. 12), a concerned citizen called 911 stating that eight or nine people were on the breakwall. Rescue crews were dispatched at 5:22 p.m. Once again, fire officials said, luckily, there were no injuries.
