United Way to Distribute FEMA Funding

United Way of Greater Oswego County has announced that it is in the planning stages for the distribution of $73,832 in funding that it has received from the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Those agencies interested in applying for FEMA funding must submit requests to the United Way of Greater Oswego County no later than April 3.

Testing of new emergency notification sirens to begin week of April 6

Testing of the new Nine Mile Point emergency notification sirens installed by Exelon Generation and Entergy Nuclear will begin the week of April 6. Residents may hear individual soundings of sirens in short bursts for the next few weeks as the startup and commissioning is completed. Full testing of the new sirens will be announced by Exelon Generation when a schedule is established, and will not affect the published schedule of the siren system currently in place

An estimated more than 300 people, young and old, subjected themselves to the “Ultimate Polar Shower.” “This really says a lot about our community,” the mayor said. “It’s like 15 degrees and the windchill is even colder and all these people have come out to help support Special Olympics. This is really a great turnout for a great cause!” Due to the hard-packed snow and ice in the harbor – the ‘plunge’ was re-invented as The Ultimate Polar Shower.

Patent Commissioner, Media Industry Leader Chosen For SUNY Honor

Margaret A. Focarino, now commissioner of patents at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, is to receive an honorary doctor of science degree at the college’s spring commencement May 16. An honorary doctor of humane letters degree will be bestowed on Louis A. Borrelli Jr. at Oswego’s winter commencement at 10 a.m. Dec. 12 in the Marano Campus Center arena and convocation hall.

New Oswego County Law Will Provide Gradual Tax Exemption For Home Improvements

Oswego County homeowners can apply to receive a gradual tax exemption for capital improvements to their homes under a new local law approved by the Oswego County Legislature March 12. The law exempts residential buildings from increased taxes and special ad valorem levies for capital improvements valued at $5,000 or more for a period of eight years. The law has been submitted to the Secretary of State and will take effect after it has been filed by that office.

10th Annual Oswego County Workforce Development Youth Career Summit

The Workforce Development Board of Oswego County, a branch of the SUNY Oswego Office of Business and Community Relations, hosted its 10th Annual Youth Career Summit recently in Lanigan Hall at the college, with 450 Oswego County eighth grade students in attendance. The students from Altmar-Parish-Williamstown, Hannibal, Mexico, Oswego and Pulaski school districts attended this free event to learn about career choices in our county from local business professionals.
