Caseworkers at the county Department of Social Services have been carrying larger than usual case loads for about a month now. At this week’s Finance and Personnel Committee meeting, Commissioner Gregg Heffner requested the legislature expedite refilling five caseworker positions. Currently, the extra cases are redistributed to existing workers.

SUNY Oswego’s Mentor-Scholar Program, in partnership with Fulton City School District’s Community School, served more than 80 guests at its community dinner recently at Fulton Junior High. “Events like this are a great way to bring communities together to realize the impact that individuals and organizations can have through shared resources,” said Scott Ball, project coordinator of Mentor-Scholar.

On July 23 the NRG Lakeview Stage in Breitbeck Park will set the mood for the rest of a spectacular weekend as one of the premier free music festivals in the nation kicks off. State Senator Patty Ritchie has announced the new State Budget will include nearly $13 million to help local colleges improve the learning experience for students by making upgrades to their campuses. Included in the spending plan is $6.65 million for SUNY Oswego, $1.95 million for SUNY Canton and $4.35 million for Jefferson Community College.
History lovers, students and professional historians will have the opportunity to learn more about the decades leading up to and following the War of 1812 as well as artistic tips, tricks and techniques for re-creating historic moments at the Oswego International War of 1812 Symposium. The fifth annual event runs from Friday, April 17 to Sunday April 19.
The Oswego City School District Board of Education did much more than hear about the (budgetary) obstacles confronting it at the final regular meeting of March. A full agenda awaited the board members as they sat down. In the “Board of Education” portion of the agenda, approval was granted for a proposed policy relating to “Entitlement to Attend-Age and Residency” policy as well as the pupil instructional calendar for 2015-16.
United Way of Greater Oswego County has announced that it is in the planning stages for the distribution of $73,832 in funding that it has received from the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Those agencies interested in applying for FEMA funding must submit requests to the United Way of Greater Oswego County no later than April 3.
State Senator Patty Ritchie announced today (March 30), that the new State Budget will include record funding for agriculture programs designed to connect consumers with locally produced farm products, increase farmers’ yields, boost rural economies and strengthen the future of family farms.
Testing of the new Nine Mile Point emergency notification sirens installed by Exelon Generation and Entergy Nuclear will begin the week of April 6. Residents may hear individual soundings of sirens in short bursts for the next few weeks as the startup and commissioning is completed. Full testing of the new sirens will be announced by Exelon Generation when a schedule is established, and will not affect the published schedule of the siren system currently in place
