Operators at Nine Mile Point Nuclear Station removed Unit 2 from service at 2:07 p.m. Feb. 18, after water levels in the unit’s reactor temporarily increased. Station equipment responded as designed during the shutdown. The unit remains offline and reactor water levels have returned to normal.
Oswego County residents welcomed a blizzard of kindness this month. The Office of Business and Community Relations at SUNY Oswego would like to thank the community for participating in this year’s National Random Acts of Kindness Week. Students from Altmar-Parish-Williamstown, Fulton, Mexico, Phoenix and other school districts showed their spirit by performing small random acts of kindness for fellow students and their teachers.
The Oswego Lighthouse restoration project is well under way and you can show your support of this beloved icon on April 25, at the American Foundry. “Love Our Lighthouse Day” will be from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and feature a lighthouse presentation, live and silent auctions, and bargain tables. Proceeds made during the event will benefit the restoration project.
Rep. John Katko Tuesday (Feb. 17) set forth his priorities for his inaugural term in Congress. Katko has pledged to work with both parties to help grow the local economy, create jobs and improve everyday life for Central New York. His efforts will be supported by continuous engagement with his constituents. “Fighting for Central New York is my highest priority in Congress,” Katko said. “I look forward to engaging with constituents across NY-24 and explaining my plans to be an effective advocate for them at the federal level.”
The FCSD Comprehensive District Education Plan Committee met recently at a planning workshop to discuss district goals and student achievement for the next three years. According the school website, “The FCSD CDEP plan coordinates the district instructional programs, curricula, assessments, grant supported programs and policies and procedures toward the goal of ensuring student mastery of the NYS learning standards.” The current CDEP will conclude at the end of this June.
On February 10 at approximately 4:50 p.m. on Maple Avenue, just west of County Route 6 in the town of Volney, the Oswego County Drug Task Force, with the assistance of the Fulton City Police Department, executed a search warrant on a pickup truck being operated by Johnathan A. Baldwin. Baldwin, 30, of 52 E. Fourth St., Upper Apartment, Oswego, was the target of a Drug Task Force investigation regarding the possession and sales of heroin in and around the city of Fulton.
At about 3:05 p.m. today (Feb. 17), members of the Oswego County Sheriff’s Office responded to a two-vehicle motor vehicle accident that occurred on County Route 53 in the town of Scriba that ended with one fatality. Identification of the deceased is pending family notifications. The cause of the accident remains under investigation.

Where can you go for help or advice? “Contaminated water can be a threat to your health. If your drinking water comes from a household well, you alone are responsible for assuring that it is safe,” said Jiancheng Huang, Oswego County Public Health Director.
The grassroots group Save Oswego’s Historic Sites returned to the council chambers recently to continue the fight to save the former Cahill building. “Now that the property is again available for bids from potential developers, we reiterate our position to the mayor and council to move with caution on this property,” said Mercedes Niess, the group’s spokesperson.
Oswego robotics team won the Northern NY VEX Skyrise State Championship for the second year in a row and now qualifies for the world championship competition. Freezing Code (#9282) is a team of seven local youth (from grades 9-11), which is in its second year of building and programming robots. The team will now have the opportunity to compete against VEX robotics teams from all around the world.
