Holocaust Remembrance Day To Be Observed Jan. 27 at Fort Ontario

On Jan. 27 at 7 p.m. Shannon Cilento will deliver an illustrated lecture on the history of the World War II post chapel – synagogue at Fort Ontario State Historic Site. The event is free and open to the public and will be held in the Enlisted Men’s Barracks inside the old stone fort. Plenty of free parking will be provided.

Wireless Phone Customers Reminded To Sign Up for Hyper-Reach Emergency Notifications

Oswego County residents who would like to receive emergency notifications through their wireless phones are reminded to sign up for the Hyper-Reach Broadcast Notification Service through Oswego County’s E 9-1-1 Emergency Communications Department. E 9-1-1 uses Hyper-Reach, which is capable of sending a message to targeted households at a rate of 10,000 telephone numbers per hour, to notify residents of community alerts and local emergencies.

6-Year-Old Boy Killed in Richland Accident

THIS JUST IN: At approximately 12:40 p.m., a 2002 Dodge Durango was traveling westbound on County Route 2 when 6-year-old Amish boy, identified as Jonathan L. Swartzentruber, entered the roadway after his hat was blown off his head from a wind gust. The driver attempted to take evasive action but is unable to avoid striking the boy.

Oswego Fire Department First Assistant Chief Retires

The Oswego City Fire Department announces the retirement of First Assistant Fire Chief Donald T. Dowd II. Dowd was appointed as a firefighter on June 19, 1989, by Mayor John T. Sullivan Jr. He rose quickly through the officer ranks and was appointed Lieutenant on June 23, 1996 and Captain on December 2, 2007.

Firefighters Battle Blaze At Volney Ethanol Plant

Fire crews remain on the scene of a fire earlier tonight (Jan. 8) at the Sunoco ethanol plant in Volney. The fire was reportedly in an empty warehouse, that is going to be demolished, at the site. Nearly a dozen crews were dispatched to the to the scene at the former Miller plant on Route 57. The blaze was brought under control around 8 p.m.

Legislators Add Their 2 Cents Regarding Proposed 30 Cent Surcharge

A motion to request that New York State County Law 308 be amended to authorize a wireless surcharge within the county of Oswego generated a lot of debate before finally being approved mostly along part lines. Funds from the $0.30 per month fee would greatly help the E-911 Center continue to improve its services to county residents and would treat persons with only a cell number as equitably as those with only a land line, the resolution said.
