Generosity of Former Students Creates Large Scholarship in Phoenix

Phoenix Central School graduates will soon have a new opportunity to assist with college costs thanks to a large scholarship fund recently established by an alumna of the district. After the March 2014 passing of Roberta Hurd, a graduate of the Class of 1939, the Robert and Roberta Hurd Scholarship Fund was established with a bequest gift to the Central New York Community Foundation – totaling upwards of $1 million.

Ritchie Secures Nearly $70,000 To Improve Safety At Local Schools

In an effort to improve safety and security at local schools, State Senator Patty Ritchie has announced nearly $70,000 in special funding to be distributed to districts throughout Central and Northern New York. “When children are in the classroom and when teachers are leading lessons, the focus should be on learning, not whether or not they are safe and out of harm’s way,” said Senator Ritchie.

October is national Domestic Violence Awareness Month. New York State has designated Wednesday (Oct. 15) “Wear Purple Day” so New Yorkers can show their support in ending domestic violence. Oswego County Begins Demolition of ‘Old Jail’ – DMV and Records Center Open for Business

The Oswego County Department of Motor Vehicles and County Records Center on East River Road will remain open for business over the next several weeks as contractors begin the demolition of the old Oswego County jail. County Clerk Michael C. Backus said parking spots on the north side of the “old jail” building will be restricted while the building is being demolished. The demolition project is expected to begin Oct. 20 and continue through late November.
