U.S. Senators Charles E. Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand and U.S. Representative Dan Maffei today (Sept 22) announced that Oswego County Opportunities, Inc., has been awarded $250,000 through the Department of Justice Office on Violence Against Women.
UPDATE: Authorities have located Mr. Clifford and he’s safe. The Oswego County Sheriff’s Office is seeking assistance in locating James A. Clifford, 71, of Orwell. Clifford was last seen on Sept. 10 at the NYS Department of Motor Vehicles on Taft Road, North Syracuse.
SUNY Oswego has taken over as host campus of the American Journal of Undergraduate Research, a peer-reviewed, open-source publication for student scholarly and creative work in a wide variety of fields. Chemistry department faculty member Kestutis Bendinskas, a subject editor with the journal for eight years, rose to editor, succeeding the late Cliff Chancey of the University of Northern Iowa, who established the journal in 2002.

Julie Chetney will be running 26 miles next month in the Marine Corps Marathon. “I am a mother to four great amazing kids. And like most mothers, I tell them we are blessed with what God has given us every day for our family – even if it’s the struggles day in and day out with Type 1 Diabetes,” she said. Her effort will help raise awareness and funds for The Joslin Diabetes Center. Professionals at the center have been a Godsend to her and her family over the years, she said.
At about 2:45 a.m. today (Sept. 21), members of the Oswego County Sheriff’s Office, Mexico Fire Department and McFee Ambulance responded to State Route 104 in the town of Mexico, near George Road, for a single-car motor vehicle collision. The investigation is pending identification of the decedent and notification of next of kin.
Officials at St. Luke Health Services in Oswego and Michaud Residential Health Services in Fulton announced Friday (Sept. 19) that tentative contract agreements have been reached with Service Employees International Union (SEIU 1199) Upstate. SEIU 1199 represents service and maintenance employees at both facilities. St. Luke and Michaud are affiliated not-for-profit, community-based healthcare organizations. The previous contract agreements expired July 31.
“Sudden power outages can come during a severe thunderstorm or windstorm, ice storm, or equipment failure on the power grid,” said Emergency Management Office Director Dale A. Currier, CEM. “People should be prepared for emergencies that could last 7 to 10 days.”
Summer 2014 goes into the record books just a tad cooler and a little wetter. But it will mostly be remembered for the damaging winds in early July, according to Bill Gregway, local observer for the National Weather Service.
The Oswego County Office for the Aging, located in the Oswego County Health Complex, 70 Bunner St. in Oswego, will undergo necessary repairs to the sidewalk in front of its outside entryway. Beginning early in the week of September 22, the office’s main entrance on the front, or north side, of the building will be closed to the public while the county works to repair and replace the sidewalk.
