Horse Dies of EEE in Oswego County

A second horse in southern Oswego County has died of the Eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) virus, the Oswego County Health Department reported today. The horse, which was stabled on Gristwood Road in the southern portion of the town of Palermo, died Aug. 27. Jiancheng Huang, Oswego County Public Health Director, said horses are very susceptible to EEE if they are not vaccinated. A horse in the town of Schroeppel died of EEE earlier in August.

Lake Neatahwanta Project “On Track” Says Dredger

Except for a quick break Tuesday (Sept. 2) to meet the state senator, the Groh Dredging & Marine team has been hard at work pulling sediment from the bottom of Lake Neatahwanta since dredging began July 25 and grid one is expected to be finished any day. Several scientific surveys conducted in the past two decades indicate that dredging is the next step to helping the little lake by the big lake recover from its current unhealthy state.

Ritchie Delivers $100,000 For Transportation Improvements In CNY

Senator Patty Ritchie has announced she has secured $100,000 in special funding to improve transportation in Oswego County by replacing culverts in the towns of Hannibal and West Monroe. “Doing things like replacing culverts and repairing roads helps to improve our local communities by making transportation more efficient and safer for local residents,” she said. “I’m pleased to be able to provide this funding, which will allow the Towns of Hannibal and West Monroe manage the costs associated with making necessary improvements to their roadways.”

Executive Director of the United Way of Greater Oswego County, Melanie Trexler has announced that Bill Crist, superintendent of Schools for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Syracuse, will officially take over the reins as president of the agency’s board of directors at the United Way’s 2014 / 2015 Kickoff Breakfast, September 10, at the American Foundry. Crist follows out-going United Way Board President Kathy Fenlon.

Oswego To Set Public Hearing On Code For Vacant Buildings

The Administrative Services Committee tweaked the proposed Vacant Buildings Code on Tuesday night. The Quality of Life Committee presented the tentative new code to councilors recently for their review.
Councilors Tuesday night opted to include “at fair market value” in the section dealing with attempts to sell the building. And, they upped the level of the fine to $250.

Smooth Opening for New School Year In Oswego

Thousands of students headed back to the classroom Wednesday to start another new school year. “There’s a positive atmosphere all around the district today,” said Superintendent of Schools Ben Halsey. “All the students are smiling; we have a friendly and welcoming staff, it’s just a great opening day. Oswego County Will Conduct Aerial Spraying Tonight

The Oswego County Health Department plans to conduct aerial spraying of approximately 10,000 acres of land in the Big Bay – Toad Harbor Swamp area in the towns of Hastings, West Monroe and Constantia between 6 and 9 p.m. today (Sept. 3). The area was previously sprayed in early August and is bounded by U.S. Route 11 in Central Square to the west; NYS Route 49 to the north; up to but not including the village of Constantia to the east; and the shoreline of Oneida Lake to the south. Spraying will not take place over the waters of Oneida Lake.
