The Oswego County Health Department plans to conduct aerial spraying of approximately 22,775 acres in portions of the towns of Hastings, Mexico, New Haven, Palermo and Volney Friday and Saturday evenings, Aug. 8 and 9, depending on weather conditions. The aerial spray will begin after 6 p.m.
2014 marks the 30th year the Zonta Club of Oswego has presented the Amelia Earhart Woman of Achievement Award to a woman who has dedicated herself to making a difference in her community and serving as a role model to other women. Earhart began her career as a social worker and a member of Zonta before she made history flying across the Atlantic Ocean. On this special anniversary of the award, it is befitting that this year’s recipient, Diane Cooper-Currier, is also a social worker and a prominent leader in the health and human services sector in Oswego County.
U.S. senators Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand announced Wednesday the New Haven Volunteer Fire Corporation will receive a $23,741 federal grant from the Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program. The New Haven Volunteer Fire Corporation will use this funding to purchase a new fire hose. The town’s current fire hose is more than 20 years old and is showing signs of deterioration in the form of dry rotting, making the need for a new hose particularly acute.
The Oswego County Health Department announced today (Aug. 6) that the David C. Webb Memorial Park Bathing Beach on Oneida Lake in the town of Constantia remains closed to swimming due to the presence of a blue-green algae bloom. “We are working with park officials who are monitoring the beach for blue-green algae,” said Oswego County Public Health Director Jiancheng Huang. “The beach will remain closed until it has cleared and testing shows the water is safe.”
The Oswego County Health Department reported today that the Eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) virus has been found in five new mosquito samples collected recently. Four were taken from the Toad Harbor Big Bay Swamp area in the town of West Monroe and near the village of Central Square where aerial spraying was conducted on Aug. 1. The fifth was a sample collected from traps in the northern portion of the town of Palermo.
On Aug. 16 and 17, Cushing’s Battery, 4th U.S. Artillery Regiment, will host a Civil War artillery event at Fort Ontario State Historic Site in Oswego. Re-enactors will conduct tactical weapons demonstrations or battles both days at 1 p.m. The Civil War shopping mall will be open for those wishing to acquire reproduction period clothing, knick knacks, toys, and other interesting historical items or accoutrements. Regular admission will be charged.
Councilor Eric VanBuren feels changes to the code are needed to help the city better get a handle on the problem of tall grass around Oswego. Vacant lots are especially a problem, he said. And, it seems like the city has an issue cutting its own grass, he added.

In his court appearance Monday, Zachary Scott, pleaded guilty to one count of first degree burglary, conditioned upon a sentence of 19 and a half years in prison, along with 5 years parole in full satisfaction of the six murder, robbery and burglary charges against him.
In addition to the prison sentence, District Attorney Gregory Oakes said, “As a condition of the plea, he must testify truthfully and completely against his two codefendants, should those matters go to trial.”
Gary Thibodeau was convicted of kidnapping New Haven teen-age Heidi Allen on Easter Sunday 1994. Her body has never been found. He was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison. His brother, Richard Thibodeau, was acquitted in a separate jury trial. On Monday dozens of family and friends held a rally in support of Gary in Oswego’s East Park. They touted new evidence that has come to light that they say will help get his conviction overturned.
