Aug. 27 Program Will Explore History of Fort Ontario’s Storm Warning Tower

Fort Ontario’s Coastal Warning Display tower and its history will be the topic of a lecture by Fort Ontario curator Jenny Emmons Aug. 27, at 7 p.m. The lecture will take place in the Enlisted Men’s Barracks at Fort Ontario. It is her hope that this talk serves not only to draw attention to this landmark’s significance in the past, but may also spur interest in its preservation for the future.

FitzPatrick Nuclear Power Plant Begins 21st Refueling Outage

Control room operators removed Entergy’s James A. FitzPatrick Nuclear Power Plant from service at 5:03 p.m. today (Aug. 24) to begin its 21st refueling and maintenance outage. During the outage, workers will replace 184 fuel assemblies in the reactor and perform various maintenance activities, tests and inspections on plant equipment. Other major work includes a complete retube of the plant’s main condenser. The plant’s existing condenser tubes constructed of admiralty brass will be replaced with titanium tubes designed to be resistant to silt and other abrasive sediments found in Lake Ontario.

ARISE Plans ‘Light up the Night’ 5K Run, Walk

Participants will all gather at Franklin Square and then do “a party dance” (normally played at weddings). People are encouraged to dress in glow sticks, glow bracelets, wear some form of glow-in-the dark clothing, body paint or battery operated lights. They will go to Fort Ontario, do another dance, and then return to Franklin Square for the last dance.

Ritchie Announces $200,000 For Dredging Of Lake Neatahwanta

State Senator Patty Ritchie has announced she has secured $200,000 in special funding to help the city of Fulton and the town of Granby in their work to dredge Lake Neatahwanta and ultimately make the body of water usable again. This most recent support, which comes just days before dredging is slated to begin, builds upon $200,000 secured last year by Senator Ritchie; bringing the two year total to $400,000.

Fulton Five-Year-Old Boosts Library Building Blocks

When a five-year-old Fulton boy wanted to help the library he loves, his budding entrepreneurial spirit inspired him to do what kids can do when they want to fund a project – he offered to open a lemonade stand. Declan Nickerson approached Fulton Public Library children’s coordinator Janelle Wallace with his idea. “I was touched when Declan came to me with the idea of a lemonade stand and his desire to give the money to the library,” Wallace said.
