Oswego County Plans Second Aerial Spray after New EEE Results

The Oswego County Health Department reported today that the Eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) virus has been found in five new mosquito samples collected recently. Four were taken from the Toad Harbor Big Bay Swamp area in the town of West Monroe and near the village of Central Square where aerial spraying was conducted on Aug. 1. The fifth was a sample collected from traps in the northern portion of the town of Palermo.

Fort Ontario Hosts Civil War Artillery Event Aug. 16 – 17

On Aug. 16 and 17, Cushing’s Battery, 4th U.S. Artillery Regiment, will host a Civil War artillery event at Fort Ontario State Historic Site in Oswego. Re-enactors will conduct tactical weapons demonstrations or battles both days at 1 p.m. The Civil War shopping mall will be open for those wishing to acquire reproduction period clothing, knick knacks, toys, and other interesting historical items or accoutrements. Regular admission will be charged.

Teen Enters Guilty Plea in Granby Murder Case, Agrees To Testify

In his court appearance Monday, Zachary Scott, pleaded guilty to one count of first degree burglary, conditioned upon a sentence of 19 and a half years in prison, along with 5 years parole in full satisfaction of the six murder, robbery and burglary charges against him.
In addition to the prison sentence, District Attorney Gregory Oakes said, “As a condition of the plea, he must testify truthfully and completely against his two codefendants, should those matters go to trial.”

Dozens Rally In Support of Gary Thibodeau

Gary Thibodeau was convicted of kidnapping New Haven teen-age Heidi Allen on Easter Sunday 1994. Her body has never been found. He was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison. His brother, Richard Thibodeau, was acquitted in a separate jury trial. On Monday dozens of family and friends held a rally in support of Gary in Oswego’s East Park. They touted new evidence that has come to light that they say will help get his conviction overturned.

Micro Burst Helped Push July’s Precipitation Above Average

July 2014 was a cooler than average month punctuated with above average precipitation thanks to a brief but violent storm, according to Bill Gregway, local observer for the National Weather Service. The average temperature last month was 1.8 degrees below normal. Total precipitation was 2.78 inches above average, due to the July 8 wind and rain storm.

Oswego County Clerk Warns of Phone Scam

Oswego County Clerk Michael C. Backus warned residents of a telephone scam which claims the person receiving the phone call will have a warrant issued for their arrest if they fail to dial an out-of-state phone number by 5 p.m. that same day and make payment. The scam turned up in Monroe County last week and appears to be nationwide.

Oswego County DA Offers Update On Search For Heidi

Yesterday morning (Aug. 1), I met with John O’Brien from the Post-Standard to obtain the location of the structure that he and the federal investigator recently searched. Although Mr. O’Brien previously reported that their search of the structure revealed no human remains, I wanted to have law enforcement conduct a thorough and professional investigation of the site for the sake of certainty. There is no reason to believe this site was ever involved with the abduction of Heidi Allen.
