On July 16 at 7 p.m., Colonel Harold Youmans, U.S.A. Retired, will present an illustrated lecture entitled “Eight Days in May, the British Raid at Oswego, New York,” in the Enlisted Men’s Barracks at old Fort Ontario. Colonel Youmans will bring new information and insights into the May 5-6, 1814, British amphibious attack on Oswego intended to delay American ship construction at Sackets Harbor.
A request to set a public hearing regarding proposed Local Law No. 2 of 2014 turned into nearly an hour-long discussion of the city’s budget process and transparency in government at Monday night’s the Planning and Development Committee meeting. Gay Williams, city attorney, requested authorization to schedule a public hearing for July 28 for 7:10 p.m. in the Council Chambers at City Hall. If the budget has a tax rate increase of 5 percent or more than the previous year’s tax rate, then the budget shall go to a public referendum in that year’s November election,
The action is being considered following a large party at the beach last year, which trashed the area. On July 26 (the night of the fireworks), at 7 p.m., the Police Department will allow access only for viewing of the fireworks, and will close at the conclusion of the fireworks until 7 a.m. July 28.
The Port City’s annual parade kicked off at 1 p.m. Sunday and lasted until nearly 3 p.m. The event had a little something for everyone, from music to a variety of vehicles and bands interspersed with several patriotic floats.
UPDATE – The victim has been identified as a 37-year-old Pulaski man. His son is said to be unhurt. Authorities say the man was attempting to save a boy who had fallen into the river. The investigation is continuing.
A one-day count of homeless individuals in Oswego County, the Point in Time survey, mandated by the federal department of Housing and Urban Development, is a concise effort by area human service agencies to raise the awareness of homelessness and compile an approximate number of those who are homeless, or are housing vulnerable, in Oswego County.
The Oswego Common Council voted 4-0-3 Tuesday night to approve the purchace of a portable milling machine for the Department of Public Works, as well as the reimbursement of the purchase through CHIPS funding from the state.
A two-car rollover accident in the village of Phoenix at approximately 8:27 p.m. Thursday sent at least three people to the hospital.
After six months of research the city of Fulton received its review report from the state’s financial restructuring board on Monday (June 30) which includes several recommendations and an offering of $400,000 in grant money if certain conditions are met.
“There’s still more they want us to do,” Mayor Ron Woodward said.
Included in the funding is $5,000 for Pulaski High School; aid which helped to make a trip to represent New York State in the National Fourth of July Parade in Washington D.C. possible. “I must say that I am very surprised and incredibly humbled by this wonderful donation. In terms of what this means to the Oswego Marching Buccaneers is that it will help us in many areas,” said Scott Ciesla, Oswego’s director.
