Oswego School Board Names New Officers, Assistant Superintendent

In a brief reorganizational meeting Tuesday morning, the Oswego school board appointed a new slate of officers for the 2014-2015 school year. Kathleen Allen, the board’s president for the 2013-2014 academic year, was re-appointed president for the coming school year. Lynda Sereno was named VP. Dr. Dean Goewey was approved as the district’s new assistant superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction, replacing the retired Cathy Chamberlain.

Volunteers Will Attack Invasive Plants at Port Ontario July 12

Volunteers, river guides, and members of local environmental organizations will gather July 12, at the Pine Grove Boat Launch near Selkirk Shores State Park for a community water chestnut pull on the Salmon River Estuary. Volunteers may ride in a driftboat with a river guide or bring their own canoes and kayaks.

Renaissance Festival To Go On As Scheduled

Empire Attractions is pleased to announce that the Sterling Renaissance Festival will indeed open as scheduled on July 5. After a challenging couple of weeks, Empire Attractions was able to generate funds needed to get the beloved festival open. Though short of the original goal, the effort generated overwhelming community support helping to build broad awareness and to help secure enough conventional financing to open the gates for the 2014 season.

French and Indians to Attack Fort Ontario, Again!

On Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 11 a.m., historically uniformed, dressed and accoutered volunteers will gather at Fort Ontario State Historic Site to re-create the July 5 to 6, 1759 French attack on Oswego. Once again the French, under the Chevalier de la Corne, will achieve surprise when their scouts overrun a British woodcutting party, but lose momentum when their Sulpican Priest Abbe Piquet stops the main force of attackers to pray for victory, thus providing the panicked defenders time to roll flour and pork barrels into a defensive line.
