Each year more people in the United States die from extreme heat exposure than from hurricanes, lightening, tornadoes, floods, and earthquakes combined. On average, about 300 people die each year from exposure to heat. The Oswego County Health Department recommends that everyone understand the warning signs of heat-related illness and take special care of those at risk.
The Oswego County Health Department announced Sunday that the David C. Webb Memorial Park Bathing Beach on Oneida Lake in the town of Constantia has been closed to swimming due to the presence of a blue-green algae bloom.
Preliminary information, supported by physical evidence at the scene, indicates that the fire was accidentally set by a juvenile in the residence. The juvenile apparently had inadvertently started the fire while playing with a lighter.
Here we go again. Today starts another hot and humid work week. High near 85; some places could see 90.
A 2005 motorcycle operated by Michael J. Huzzy, 67, from Lyons Falls, NY, was travelling eastbound on County Route 39 making a right turn into a parking lot when he was struck by a 2001 motorcycle operated by Steven E. Parsons, 25, from 3552 Osceola Road in West Leyden, NY, causing both operators to be ejected, according tothe police report.
Fort Ontario State Historic Site in Oswego will host a Civil War encampment and radio-controlled airplane show during Harborfest weekend, July 27 and 28. Living history displays, drills, guard duty, campfire cooking, and more will take place inside the historic fort, while radio-controlled airplanes will fly off a runway on the bluff north of the fort.
As of July 11, anyone seeking to run for a seat on the county legislature needed to have his or her petitions filed with the Oswego County Board of Elections. In order to be put on the ballot for the primary elections, petitioners needed signatures comprising 5% of the total registered voters in his or her party.
UPDATE: A three-year-old child is dead following Saturday night’s fire, authorities said.The other occupants of the residence were able to get out on their own and no other injuries were reported.The fire was at 70 W. Mohawk St. The blaze was reported at about 8:42 p.m.
Oswego Health will once again lead off Harborfest’s Children Parade with its new start time and route on July 26. Once the parade arrives at its new destination, the health system will offer fun games and activities for children. This year’s parade begins at Breitbeck Park at 1:30 p.m. and proceeds along West Fifth Street to Franklin Square/West Park.
