Gary Mix Chosen as Oswego Interim Superintendent of Schools

Gary Mix has been appointed as the Oswego City School District Interim Superintendent of Schools. On Tuesday night, the Oswego City School District Board of Education unanimously approved the appointment. Mix will commence his duties in the Oswego City School District on Tuesday, July 2. The board will pay Mix $2,400 per week during the months of July and August and $3,000 per week during the months of September through December.

French and Indians Return to Fort Ontario June 29, 30

The French and their Indian allies will emerge from the woods near Fort Ontario on June 29 and 30 and recreate the failed 1759 surprise attack on Fort Ontario in Oswego. The failed attack spelled the beginning of the end of French Canada. (Photo by Fort Ontario State Historic Site.)The sights, sounds, and smells of camp and garrison life during the French and Indian War will greet visitors to Fort Ontario State Historic Site in Oswego the weekend of June 29 and 30. Encampments of British, French and Native American troops and warriors who fought each other at Oswego during the 1750s will be displayed from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. June 29 and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 30.

Oswego’s Independence Parade Committee Announces Featured Performers

The annual Oswego Independence Parade will feature the sparkle and pageantry of The Uptown String Band, a member of the Philadelphia Mummers String Band Association. Pictured is The Uptown String Band’s Captain Ryan Radcliffe, who will lead the group through Oswego on July 7 beginning at 1 p.m. from Oswego High School and ending at the East Seventh Street tunnel at Fort Ontario.The Oswego Independence Parade will feature The Uptown String Band, a member of the Philadelphia Mummers String Band Association. The Independence Celebration, which will be held on July 7 beginning with the Annual Independence Parade at 1 p.m. The theme for this very special event is “Fifty Years of Family, Fun and Fireworks!”

Group Aims To Keep Rangers’ Memories Alive

Members of the Able Company 5th Ranger Infantry Living History Association man a "machine gun nest" at Fort Ontario.The 5th Ranger Battalion is credited with breaching the Atlantic Wall on Dog White Beach on June 6, 1944, attacking and capturing German forts on the Brest Peninsula, holding the Irsh-Zerf road 10 miles behind German lines in Germany waiting for the Armor to relieve them. A group of re-enactors was at Fort Ontario recently to keep alive the memory of these brave men.
