The 5th Ranger Battalion is credited with breaching the Atlantic Wall on Dog White Beach on June 6, 1944, attacking and capturing German forts on the Brest Peninsula, holding the Irsh-Zerf road 10 miles behind German lines in Germany waiting for the Armor to relieve them. A group of re-enactors was at Fort Ontario recently to keep alive the memory of these brave men.
The third annual Oswego War of 1812 Symposium may be in the history books; however, the bicentennial commemoration continues with the traveling display of the “U.S. Brig Oneida,” by award-winning local artist Tim Ames.
The top men’s finisher for the third year in a row was Brad DePoint from Fulton. Sascha Scott of Syracuse completed her last triathlon five years ago. On Saturday, the Tri-Oswego was her first victory. More than 300 men and women took on one of the several challenges the event offered.
The British Flag was lowered and the American Flag was raised over Fort Ontario on Friday as a large audience, mostly elementary students, learned about the history of the flag and the fort. A large crowd of mostly elementary students and their teachers from around the county and some re-enactors depicting different eras, filled the parade grounds to witness the Flag Day celebration.
“I’m pleased to be here this evening to recognize the students in the class of 2013,” said Jim Chupaila Hannibal’s interim principal, “who after four years of dedication and hard work are in the position of being in the top 10.”
Legislators agreed to hire the law firm of Hacker Murphy to defend the county in this litigation. They also approved a professional services contract for appraisal and related technical services to George E. Sansoucy and Cost Plus Consulting regarding the plant’s appraisal. And the county agreed to enter into an intermunicipal agreement with the town and district in regards to the tax certiorari litigation.
The six teams representing Hannibal were able to create their projects from a generous donation of more than $600 from Lockheed Martin, Syracuse University and the MOST. This is the third year Hannibal has participated in the Rocket Challenge, and also their best year yet. Hannibal was amongst the 58 competing teams.
