Four Central New York SUNY institutions — the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry (ESF), SUNY Oswego, SUNY Upstate Medical University and Onondaga Community College — have won $15 million in a competitive grant program to create the SUNY Institute of Environmental Health and Environmental Medicine
CNY Arts Center has been looking to expand for a while, and with the addition of CNY Arts Gallery, located at 47 First St., that goal is being realized. The original location of CNY Arts is at the State Street Church in Fulton and is a space where classes are held and the staff offices are located. “We didn’t have enough space for our artists to display work,” explained Bonnie McClellen, the gallery coordinator.
The illegal removal of asbestos took place about a year ago and has “nothing to do with the building they’re tearing down now,” said Fulton Mayor Ron Woodward.
Junior Girl Scout Claudia Chetney, along with dozens of youth soccer players, and the help of Parents of Special Children Inc., are in their fourth week of the “Doing it Our Way” Soccer clinics with children with disabilities.
Residents of the villages of Sandy Creek and Lacona are being advised by the Oswego County Health Department to boil all water used for drinking and cooking due to a water main break in the municipal water system. This order will be in effect until at least Tuesday, June 11.
Marion Blumenthal Lazan, a Holocaust survivor and author of the book “Four Perfect Pebbles,” was a recent visitor in the Fulton City School District where she shared her personal story of hope, courage and compassion with sixth grade students in the district. “By listening,” she said, “I hope you prevent our past from becoming your future.”
At this week’s committees and Oswego school board meeting, BOCES District Superintendent Christopher Todd addressed the community members in attendance and noted that the search for a new Oswego City School District Superintendent of Schools was continuing.

The Lakeside Winterguard hosted the ‘Cancer is a Drag Show’ at the American Foundry in Oswego. “All the raffle money gets donated to Relay for Life, plus the tips from the performers,” said the evening’s host Macy Parade. “The full amount is going to Relay for Life.” Over the course of the night seven drag queens and one drag king performed for the crowd. Each began on stage and then milled around the room collecting tips from fans.
The grant will support ORA’s community development initiatives, beginning with the engagement of neighborhood planning firm, CZB (www.czb.org). ORA will work with CZB over the next nine months to collect data and engage the community in a thorough examination of Oswego’s strengths and opportunities.
