Several new police officers and firefighters were sworn in recently at a ceremony at Oswego City Hall. Four members of the fire department received promotions, as well.
The average temperature last month was 46.6 degrees. That is 1.9 degrees above average. It was also slightly wetter than normal. Local observer for the National Weather Service, Bill Gregway, admits he was a little surprised at how warm April 2013 turned out. “I thought it was a little chilly. But it was warmer,” he said. “The figures don’t lie.”
Submitting petitions and indicating their intention to seek a seat on the Oswego City School District Board of Education are Kathleen Allen, Heather DelConte, Michael McLaughlin and James Tschudy. The terms of incumbents Kathleen Allen and James Tschudy expire on June 30.
One of the official signs of summer in Oswego is the Independence Celebration, which will be held on July 7 beginning with the 50th Anniversary Annual Independence Parade at 1 p.m. The theme for this very special event is “Fifty Years of Family, Fun and Fireworks!” The annual celebration began in 1963 and was originally organized by the Jaycees, a local service organization in the community at the time.
The Leadership Oswego County’s Class of 2013 will be delivering special gift bags to area seniors. The group has been gathering things to help make life a little easier and more enjoyable for those residing in area senior sites. They have put together more than 530 bags.
The college and board is working to reduce expenditures of its $32.36 million operating budget by approximately $1.5 million before the end of the fiscal year on August 31, 2013, to help make up for an unexpected 5 percent enrollment decrease.
A local physican’s failure to maintain accurate patient records and negligence has resulted in his ability to practice being limited. Dhanraj J Soogree, MD, of 144 W. Fourth St., Oswego, was cited recently by the the NYS Department of Health. The limitation is effective as of May 2, 2013.
On December 28, 2012, the Oswego County Legislature passed a reapportionment plan, which re-drew the boundaries of the county’s 25 legislative districts. This plan received opposition back in December and today (April 30), Legislator Dan Farfaglia announced he and fellow Democrat legislators Amy Tresidder and Doug Malone seek to have the redistricting plan declared illegal.
UPDATE: Tentative cause said to be heat generated from a torch or similar device while contractors were performing work on the front porch roof earlier in the evening.
There were no injuries reported in the fire late Monday at 85 E. Utica St., according to Jeff McCrobie, fire chief. The fire was noticed by one of the occupants of the home and reported at 10:49 p.m.
