Influenza is widespread throughout Central New York, including Oswego County, according to Jiancheng Huang, Public Health Director for Oswego County. During National Influenza Vaccination Week, Dec. 2 through 8, the County Health Department is reminding residents that it’s not too late to get vaccinated against the flu.
Last month was just 0.5-degree cooler than normal. But it was enough to break a warm streak dating back to April 2011. Precipitation was 2.56 inches below average and snowfall was 4.0 inches below average.
Troopers reportedly discovered an illegal gravity knife and several used hypodermic needles in the vehicle passenger areas during a traffic stop. Further investigation lead to the discovery of approximately 18 packets of heroin and components of a One Pot Methamphetamine manufacturing operation in the trunk, troopers said.
Oswego city lawmakers approved a law recently that prevents many felons from getting taxi licenses in the city. Officials said at the time that there’s been no specific problem — they were just trying to prevent one. Now, they’ve got a problem. A workers’ rights group is suing the city to try to kill the law.
Numerous concerts are scheduled in the upcoming weeks as the Fitzhugh Park Elementary School concert is scheduled for December 3 at 7 p.m. in the Robinson-Faust Theatre for the Performing Arts at Oswego High School.

December will get off to a very warm start this weekend
Hundreds brave the chilly temperatures and brisk winds for the annual ceremony. The city’s holiday tree was lit Thursday night in Civic Plaza. And, Santa greeted scores of youngsters eager to tell him their Christmas wish lists.
The Oswego County tax levy increase for 2013 … is zero. Fred Beardsley, chair of the Oswego County Legislature made that pronouncement at the end of a nearly 90-minute session Thursday night. “It couldn’t have happened without both sides of the aisle working together. This budget could not have been achieved if it wasn’t for the cooperation that went on in this legislature,” he said.
Your baking prowess and artistic skills could win prizes next month. This year’s holiday Gingerbread House Contest has three categories. The theme this year is the Oswego Lighthouse. Contestants will be asked to bake and decorate a gingerbread house that looks like the historic Oswego landmark.
