Hurricane Irene Slides Around Oswego County

The Oswego County area was spared the brunt of Hurricane Irene’s fury. “We were lucky. We have had to deal with some branches and a few limbs,” according to Bill Gregway, local observer for the National Weather Service. “Other places, just a little south and east of here have a lot more damage, flooding and power outages.”

High Wind Warning Sunday for Oswego County from Hurricane Irene

Hurricane Irene may just nick us in Oswego County, but she’ll still have an effect on our weather. The National Weather Service has issued a wind advisory starting at 8:00 a.m. Sunday and running to midnight.

Winds will come from the north at 25 to 35 miles an hour with gusts up to 50 miles an hour.

UPDATE, SUNDAY MORNING: The weather service has reissued the warning and has added one interesting fact:  The winds we’ll be seeing will come from the north.  “Trees in the area are anchored for prevailing west to southwest winds and are very susceptible to even marginally strong winds from the north.”.

Oswego County Completes Portion of Aerial Spraying Friday Night

The central area encompassed nearly 18,000 acres in the towns of New Haven, Volney, Hastings, Palermo and Mexico. Aerial spraying began on Tuesday, August 23 with the southern portion of the area and worked in a northerly direction, covering about two-thirds of the area. The remainder was finished tonight before spraying moved to the Dugway area, which included portions of the towns of Albion and Parish.
