‘I Need to See Her One More Time’: Woman’s Essay Yearns for Lost Mom, Highlights the Work of Literacy Volunteers

“If I could bring my Mom back from Heaven,” Shirley Slate began, reading from her very first essay, a prayer for the return from Heaven for her mother for one more day.

“I just want to hold her one more time,” she said.

That Shirley Slate could read or write that essay was remarkable.Â At age 52, she’s learning to read and write and aiming to get her GED.

Fulton’s varsity boys soccer team lost its opening game, 1-0, to East Syracuse-Minoa on Friday despite having control of the ball for much of the contest.
