“School can’t be starting today,” lamented one youngster Wednesday morning outside of Oswego Middle School. “It’s still hot; it’s still summer!” Despite what the thermometer said, schools in the Oswego district threw open their doors and welcomed thousands of students back to the classroom.

Three dogs were exposed to the rabies virus in late August when they met up with a rabid raccoon in the town of Orwell, the Oswego County Health Department announced today (September 5). Jiancheng Huang, Oswego County Public Health Director, said the three dogs had current rabies vaccinations and were given rabies booster shots as a precautionary measure.

Mayor Billy Barlow received a request from Sara Carmichael, Service to Aid Families Advocate with Oswego County Opportunities. They would like to use a portion of Breitbeck Park during the month of October in order to place a display in recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month. An 18-year-old Palermo man is in custody after leading police on a chase Monday through several side streets before crashing the vehicle. No injuries were reported.

At approximately 2:16 p.m. today (September 3), Oswego Police were dispatched to the area of Orville Street near East Twelfth Street in the city of Oswego to assist EMS with a combative patient. Prior to police arrival the patient allegedly threatened EMS and then threatened suicide. The patient did not allowed police or EMS to enter his residence.

Historian Corey King will lead a lantern tour series of the post cemetery at Fort Ontario State Historic Site in Oswego this fall. The four-part series begins at 8 p.m. on Saturdays, September 8, 15, 22, and 29. Admission is $15 and reservations must be in advance.
