Mexico Students Encourage Kindness Challenge Following Recent Threats

Mexico High School’s Friends of Rachel Club members have put forth weekly challenges for their peers to spread kindness and brighten someone’s day. The challenge for the week of March 26 to March 30 of “I will be there for someone who needs a shoulder to lean on or a helping hand” came on the heels of multiple threats of violence against the Mexico Academy and Central School District, and some more specifically at the high school.

Fundraising Teams Go Head To Head For St. Baldrick’s

With the Sunday, April 15, head-shaving event just a few weeks away, some 21 fundraising teams are busy collecting donations for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, the world’s largest private (non-government) funder of childhood cancer research. “The teams vary, from one or two members to 30, from young to old, from male to female,” explained volunteer event coordinator Dan Witmer.

The 444th Engineer Company based at Oswego - Troops from the Oswego U.S. Army Reserve Center repaired and marked IED (Improvised Explosive Device) locations in Iraq in 2007-08. In 2011-12 the 444th Engineer Company based at Oswego deployed to Afghanistan and suffered three men killed and one severely wounded.

The Army Engineers who garrison the Fort Ontario Army Reserve Center – the men and women of the 444th Engineer Company, 479th Engineer Brigade, USAR – go about their daily lives and deployments mostly without any notice from the community and continue a history of military occupation of the post dating back to 1755. Friends of Fort Ontario will host a free program featuring the personal stories of officers and soldiers of the company.

Third Ward Informational Meeting Results in Change

A recent informational meeting for the Third Ward organized by Third Ward councilor and council president, Donald Patrick Jr. allowed residents to express questions and concerns. The first meeting allowed the city’s Department of Public Works Commissioner Charles Smith III to help field questions and provide information to residents. Commissioner Smith provided information on city garbage pick up, road work funding and restrictions, infrastructure, sewer and water bills, proper collection of yard materials, and more.

Student Charged After Posting Threatening Picture To Snapchat Regarding School Violence

At about 3 p.m. today (March 27), the New York State Police were notified of a possible threat of school violence at the Mexico High School. The threat involved a digital image posted to snap chat. The investigation determined that a student photographed another student holding a firearm and posted the image with a caption “Next School Shooter” on snap chat.
