Over the past few years as a legislator I’ve learned a lot about the great work that the county, our municipalities and our schools actually do. I have also learned through projects like the anti-poverty task force, shared services panel, economic development efforts and school collaborations that we all do even greater work when we all do it together, instead of struggling to make a difference in our individual silos. Having the State of the County here, in a town, in a school, in the middle of the county, is symbolic; more and more, every day, the county is moving out of its silo. We invite all of you to do the same.
With summer weather on the horizon, city officials continue working on plans to construct Fulton’s first splash park. A splash park, a fenced concrete pad with sprinkler systems, is a more cost efficient and inclusive summer entertainment activity for the youth, Fulton Mayor Ronald Woodward said. City officials budgeted $45,000 to construct the splash park for the summer of 2018 after the idea was voiced by council president representing the third ward, Donald Patrick Jr.
A small crowd got to know a little bit about five of the six candidates seeking two open seats on the Oswego Board of Education Tuesday night. Christopher Joyce had planned on participating, but was called into work. The other five faced a series of questions submitted by audience members at the OHS cafeteria. The candidates include Thomas DeCastro (incumbent), Jeffrey King, Tom Ciappa, and former board members Kathleen Allen and Mike McLaughlin.
On Monday (April 30), at approximately 4 p.m., investigators with the Oswego County Drug Task Force, with the assistance of the Oswego City Police Department, executed a narcotics related search warrant at the 300 building of 550 W. First St. in the city of Oswego. As a result of the search warrant execution, approximately 1,230 grams of Fentanyl, 324.3 grams of heroin and 62.1 grams of crack cocaine were seized, police said.
A Faculty-Student Challenge Grant from the college’s Scholarly and Creative Activities Committee makes the project possible, providing the means for Hay, a senior journalism major, to do cinematography and editing for the documentary this summer, and for Riki (formerly Rikicia Levi) and David Levi – both now 80 – to return to Oswego for interviews from their homes in the New York metropolitan area for “A New Home in Oswego: The Story of Two Refugees.”
State Police arrested Austin M. Baker, 20, from Central Square, today (April 30). He was charged with Sex Abuse 1st degree (D-felony), Forcible Touching (A-misdemeanor) and Endangering the Welfare of a Child (A-misdemeanor). The arrest stems from an incident that allegedly occurred at a residence in the town of West Monroe on or about November 11, 2017.
Governor Andrew Cuomo today (April 30) announced more than $100 million in state funding to repave and enhance roadways impacted by the harsh weather this past winter. The projects in CNY include approximately $16.4 million in projects to pave 134 lane miles of roads in Oswego, Onondaga, Cayuga, Cortland and Madison counties.
The New York State Police are attempting to locate 21-year-old Kody L. Barr, who is a suspect in the cemetery desecration case which occurred in the village of Mexico Cemetery on March 31. If anyone has information on the whereabouts of Barr, they are asked to contact State Police in Pulaski at (315) 298-1473 or State Police Headquarters at (315) 366-6000 and reference case number 8161580.
This year marks the centennial of the end of World War I, making it the theme of this year’s Fort Ontario History Conference last weekend. Historians from across the U.S. and Canada spoke on various topics including the Armistice, the Remembrance Day poppy, and Canadian Army physician and poet John McCrae whose poem “In Flanders Fields” inspired the adoption of the poppy as the symbol of remembrance in Great Britain, Canada, the U.S., and other allied countries.
