Mayor Barlow Announces Launch Of Resident Recruitment Initiative In Partnership With Major Employers In The Oswego Area

Mayor Billy Barlow announced today (Feb. 23) the launch of the Resident Recruitment Initiative, a new partnership between the city of Oswego and four major employers in and around the Oswego community. Created by Mayor Barlow and the city of Oswego, the Resident Recruitment Initiative is a comprehensive introduction and guide to the Oswego community, that will be given to new recruits and new employees of participating employers upon their hiring and orientation.

County Slates Pair Of Public Hearings

One would amend Local Law #1 of 2015 regarding extending the Residential Building Capital Improvement Exemption pursuant to Real Property Tax Law 421-f. The amendment would extend the expiration date to March 1, 2028. Also on March 15, the county will hold a public hearing regarding proposed Local Law #2 of 2018. It would update the Cold War Veterans’ Property Tax Exemption Act the county adopted in 2009.

‘Out Run Autism 5K’ Gains Support

At its meeting Tuesday night, the Administrative Services Committee gave a favorable recommendation to a request to help those touched by Autism Spectrum Disorder. Justin Rudgick, community development director, received a request from Julie Chetney on behalf of the Oswego County Autism Task Force to organize the Out Run Autism 5K event to be held on April 7.

SUNY Oswego School of Business Accreditation Extended

It’s business as usual at SUNY Oswego’s School of Business and the Association for the Advancement of Collegiate Schools of Business acknowledged that recently by extending the school’s accreditation another five years. There have been continuous improvements and major changes since first being accredited in 2002 by the association, said School of Business Dean Richard Skolnik. The importance of the association and the accreditation is that it’s not just one individual objective being met, it’s a consistent approach across the years.

Committee Sends Increased Enforcement, Penalties Plan To Council

Mayor Billy Barlow’s proposed local law to aggressively increase the enforcement, fines and penalties for property maintenance issues such as tall grass, un-shoveled sidewalks, exposed garbage and other violations took a big step toward becoming a reality Tuesday night. The legislation would target property maintenance issues such as tall grass, un-shoveled sidewalks, exposed garbage and the tidiness of property visible from city streets.

Health Department Reminds People to Stay Protected from Whooping Cough

This time of year, having a fever and cough often leads one to think of flu, but the Oswego County Health Department reminds residents that flu is not the only respiratory infection going around. Pertussis, or whooping cough as many people know it, is a very contagious disease. Pertussis can cause serious illness in infants, children and adults; it is especially dangerous to infants who have not been fully vaccinated yet.

Port City To Follow County’s Support Of Elevating Fort’s Status

At its February meeting, the Oswego County Legislature unanimously approved a bipartisan resolution, offered by Tom Drumm (D) and Tim Stahl (R), which supports efforts to elevate the fort complex to national park status. The clerk was authorized to submit a certified copy of the entire resolution to Gov. Andrew Cuomo, Sen. Charles Schumer, Sen. Kristen Gillibrand, Congressman John Katko, Congresswoman Claudia Tenney, Sen. Patty Ritchie, Assemblyman Will Barclay, and Assemblyman Robert Oakes. The city plans to lend its support as well on Tuesday night.

Oswego County Announces Manufactured Housing Program for Veterans

The Oswego County Department of Community Development, Tourism and Planning has been awarded funds to provide a manufactured housing replacement program for eligible veterans. Funding for the Oswego County Veterans First Manufactured Housing Replacement Program is provided by the New York State Office of Community Renewal Housing Trust Fund Corporation.
