Slightly more than three dozen veterans and others turned out Saturday to pay tribute to Oswego’s veterans – past and present. This year marked the 99th anniversary of the first observance of Armistice Day. The best pay a veteran can receive, LTjg George Hoffman, the MC, pointed out, “is a thank you.”
In response to the growing epidemic of prescription drug and heroin abuse, the VOW Foundation and the United States Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of New York are partnering with the Central Region Addiction Resource Center, the Oswego County Prevention Coalition, Healthway and the Kallet Theater & Conference Center in jointly sponsoring a community event November 28 at the Kallet Theater.
The entire Leighton Elementary School student body turned out Thursday to honor several local veterans – many of whom were their fathers, grandfathers and great-grandfathers. Members of the school’s student council escorted the very special guests to their seats. The students and family members then applauded the veterans.
A bitter cold didn’t stop dozens of veterans and community members from braving the below freezing temperatures to attend the Fulton Veterans Council’s annual Veterans Day ceremony. Across from Fulton City Hall, President of the Fulton Veterans Council Garry Visconti led a 45-minute ceremony to honor veterans from all branches of the United States Armed Forces. Fulton Mayor Ronald Woodward Sr., city councilors, county legislators, members of the Fulton Fire and Police departments, several hometown veterans and local veterans organizations, and dozens of devoted community members braved the cold as a small token of appreciation in honoring our nation’s veterans. Father Fuchs, a World War II veteran, opened the ceremony in prayer and a reminder that today, November 11, 2017, marks 99 years to the day from the ending of the Great War, more commonly referred to as World War I.
A crash this evening (Nov. 10) involving a gasoline tanker and a pickup truck has claimed the lives of two people. The accident happened on State Route 3 near Munger Hill Road in the Town of Mexico just before 6 p.m. Two passengers in the pickup were killed, deputies said.
A generous donation has allowed Catholic Charities of Oswego County in Fulton to upgrade to an 80,000-square foot building, a growth of nearly 50,000 square feet from its previous location. Originally founded in the 1930s as an adoption agency, Catholic Charities has since evolved into a mid-sized human service agency to serve families, children, and adults throughout Oswego County and in the past two years have doubled their staff and have worked to meet increasing needs. The new location at 808 W. Broadway was donated by Michael Falcone and family, a family very involved with the Syracuse Diocese and giving back to the community. Supervisors and staff beamed with gratefulness and pride as they unveiled the new location.
SUNY Oswego University Police charged two students with third-degree criminal mischief, a Class E felony. Police arrested Andre La Fleur, 22, of Putnam Valley, and Nicholas J. LaRocca, 20, of Washingtonville, on Thursday, Nov. 9. They are accused of destroying a wooden bench near Seneca Hall.
Buccaneer excellence was on display and broadcast throughout Central New York today (Nov 9) as WSYR NewsChannel 9’s “Cool Schools Live” featured Oswego High School. Meteorologist Kate Thornton was on campus starting at 4:45 a.m. for a live weather update before heading inside to meet with some of OHS’ best and brightest for live segments during the NewsChannel 9 morning news.
Gary Melvin Goodale, of Fulton, was arrested after an investigation by the Fulton Police Department and charged with first-degree rape as well as other charges. He is alleged to have had sexual intercourse, physical sexual contact and sexual contact with a foreign object with an eight-year-old girl. It also alleged that he had physical sexual contact, oral sexual contact with a nine-year-old boy as well as physical sexual contact with an eight-year-old boy.
