Two Oswego County Brothers Charged With Hate Crime

State Police in Fulton arrested Shane M. Thomas, 27, from Hannibal, and Cody A. Thomas, 18, from Fulton, for Assault 3rd degree (as a Hate Crime), a class “E” felony. The arrests resulted from an investigation into a complaint by a 19-year-old transgender individual, who was assaulted by both subjects during two separate incidents on November 1, 2017, while the victim was riding a bicycle along State Route 3, according to police.

Empire State Development Announces Official Grand Opening Of 1886 Malt House

Empire State Development today (Nov. 2) announced the official grand opening of the 1886 Malt House in Oswego County. The state-of-the-art facility will work to meet the rising demand for malted barley that has been created by the rapidly growing beer industry statewide. This system will be capable of producing a diverse group of malted products for craft brewing industry demands. Featuring a full in-house ASBC (American Society of Brewing Chemists), the malt operation is expected to produce more than 2,000 tons of top-notch malted barley sourced from New York State farms per year. That equates to more than 1.6 million gallons of beer.

Oswego Church Honors 19th Century Brigadier General

The grave of Brig. Gen. Julius Hayden in Oswego now displays a veteran’s marker. The Civil War and Mexican-American War veteran is buried with his wife on the grounds of the Episcopal Church of the Resurrection in Oswego’s Historic District. A native of New York City, Hayden was the son of an Army officer who served in the War of 1812. He joined the Army himself when he was 18 years old and for a time was stationed at Fort Ontario.

SUNY Oswego To Recognize Veterans Day With Week Of Programming, Events

SUNY Oswego, consistently ranked a top school for its military-connected and veteran population, will celebrate veterans and the active military with several observances the week of Nov. 7 to 11, including Military Appreciation Night at a men’s ice hockey game on Veterans Day. On Tuesday, Nov. 7, a panel of U.S. military veterans from the SUNY Oswego community and members of the college’s faculty and staff will talk about life during and after military service. The event, starting at 6 p.m. in Sheldon Hall ballroom, is free and open to the public.

Arrest Made In Cemetery Vandalism Investigation

State Police have charged Cody J. Stone, 22, from Parish, with Criminal Mischief 4th degree, a class “A” misdemeanor; Leaving the Scene of a Property Damage Accident, a violation; and several other vehicle and traffic violations. Stone turned himself into patrol early this morning (Nov. 1) at the State Police barracks in Hastings.

Leighton School Invites All Veterans To Veterans’ Day Celebration

Calling all veterans! On Thursday, Nov 9, Leighton Elementary School will host a Veterans’ Day celebration. “We’ll hold an assembly at 9 a.m. in the gymnasium. We will have presentation/representation from each of the branches of military,” Jennifer Cahill, one of the organizers, told Oswego County Today. “Students will be singing the branches’ military anthems.” The students would like to invite all veterans in the community.

World War I Remembrance Project Under Way In Oswego

Mark Slosek, Oswego City Historian, and a group of other volunteers is working on a project to commemorate World War I. Next year will be the 100th anniversary of the War to End All Wars. The grassroots group recently presented its plan to members of the Common Council and received a favorable recommendation.
