Gov. Cuomo Declares State Of Emergency For Communities Impacted By Lake Ontario Flooding

Governor Cuomo today (May 2) declared a State of Emergency for the following counties in order to expedite repair to impacted structures and construction of shoreline stabilization projects: Cayuga, Jefferson, Monroe, Niagara, Orleans, Oswego, St. Lawrence, and Wayne. The Governor’s order empowers DEC and other state agencies to issue emergency individual permits for those larger-scale response actions that may be necessary.

OCO Sends Out an SOS: Bowl-A-Fun Raises Thousands To Save Shelter

Oswego County Opportunities sent out an S.O.S, and its plea for help was heard. In its seventeenth year, the annual OCO Bowl-A-Fun bowling tournament fundraiser at Lakeview Lanes was designated to help a program that recently lost federal funding leaving risk of closure. A crucial part of the Homeless Services offered through OCO, the future has been jeopardized for the Runaway and Homeless Youth Shelter that houses youth in need of safe lodging, after federal funding for the program was cut. Quickly springing into action, the OCO Bowl-A-Fun planning committee decided to use the annual fundraiser event as an S.O.S., developing a “Save Our Shelter” theme.

At Monday’s Administrative Services Committee, Tom Reynolds, assistant city attorney, requested a discussion regarding a proposed local law requiring personal flotation devices. U.S. Senator Charles E. Schumer today (May 1) announced major victories in the bipartisan federal funding bill that will greatly help Upstate New York. Schumer said these victories will boost the economy and support vital programs, including: funding for the Great Lake Restoration Initiative (GLRI), funding to confront the opioid epidemic, funding HOME/CDBG Program, critical railroad safety programs, support for education and higher-education and many more. Schumer provided statements for several major areas in which the budget will be a major boost for Upstate New Yorkers.

Rabid Bat Found in the Village of Mexico

The Oswego County Health Department reported today (April 28) that a bat has tested positive for rabies in the village of Mexico. This is the second case of rabies confirmed this year. “Bats are a common carrier of rabies,” said Oswego County Public Health Director Jiancheng Huang. “Although they rarely attack humans, bats may transmit the disease through any physical contact.”

Fire Destroys Westside Oswego Home

Investigators are trying to determine the cause of a fire that
destroyed a Tallman Street home in Oswego earlier this morning (April 28). The residence is a total loss, fire officials said. A neighboring home sustained radiant heat damage and melted siding. No injuries were reported.
