The city’s recent efforts to crack down on landlords whose properties are in need of repair due to severe code violations, or are delinquent in their taxes or water bills came under fire Monday night. At the council’s public session, two speakers pointed out while the initiative was well-intentioned, it was having unwanted repercussions.
State Police in Pulaski arrested John Fellows, 30, of Fulton, for Burglary in the second degree, a class “C” felony. He was charged following a burglary investigation where numerous household items (kitchen cabinets, kitchen appliances and other household fixtures) were stolen, State Police said today (Oct. 24).
Oswego AmeriCorps recently welcomed a new class of AmeriCorps members who pledged to “Get Things Done” for Oswego County. They joined the one million men and women who have taken the same pledge since AmeriCorps’ inception in 1994.
It’s not yet Halloween, but it’s starting to look a lot like Christmas. A troupe of volunteers is working to put the finishing touches on the 2016 Oswego Christmas Tree Lighting and Holiday Expo. SUNY Oswego’s enterprising Agricultural Testing and Analysis Labs at the Port of Oswego and the Shineman Center won a national Award of Excellence on Tuesday at the University Economic Development Association Annual Summit in Roanoke, Virginia.
Dr. Allison Rank, assistant professor of Political Science at SUNY Oswego will be one of the three speakers on the panel at next week’s Populating the Polls: Then and Now There will also be An exhibition of posters created by upstate New York designers urging residents to get out to the polls and vote. Just recently, Dr. Rank spearheaded Vote Oswego, which collected 2,637 forms to register SUNY Oswego students to vote.
Justice has been served for a former Fulton family – after a 19-year wait. Convicted cop killer Gregory Lawler was executed this evening in Atlanta. The Georgia Board of Pardons and Paroles denied his request for clemency and he was put to death late Wednesday night. Lawler, 63, was convicted for the Oct. 12, 1997, murder of Atlanta police officer John “Rick” Sowa – a native of Fulton, NY. “I’m glad it’s over. For me, 19 years of waiting is over,” Sowa’s mother, Christine Carlson Roth, told Oswego County Today.
