Governor Cuomo Announces $14 Million Route 104 Rehabilitation Project Under Way

This project was announced during last year’s Central New York “Capital for a Day” as one piece of a comprehensive 47-point plan to advance Central New York through investments in infrastructure, housing and higher education. “Route 104 in Oswego County is a critically important commerce route in Central New York, connecting Interstate 81 with rail and port facilities, farming communities and SUNY Oswego,” Governor Cuomo said. The work will take place over two construction seasons and is expected to be completed by the end of 2017.

Governor Cuomo Announces Oswego as Winner of $10 Million Downtown Grant

A packed conference center at the Best Western in Oswego anxiously awaited an announcement from Governor Cuomo. “I’m here to tell you today, congratulations you are a first place winner,” Cuomo told the room in regards to the statewide Downtown Revitalization Initiative. The initiative will provide the winning city of Oswego with a ten million dollar grant to revamp the downtown region of the city.

Fulton School Officials Update on Focus, LAP Plans

The Fulton City School District has been named a focus district for the 2016-2017 school year, with specific focus on G. Ray Bodley High School as a focus school, as well as two elementary schools in LAP status, Fairgrieve and Volney. Each of these distinctions require the schools to follow state protocol and come up with appropriate plans to combat the problem areas in the effected subgroups. Executive director of instruction and assessment, Elizabeth Conners updated the board of education on these plans at the first summer (July 12) board meeting. “This doesn’t mean we’re bad,” said Conners. “It means we have some structures and systems that we need to come back to and tighten up to ensure all students in the Fulton City School District are learning.”

Port of Oswego to Receive 14th Pacesetter Award

The Port of Oswego was awarded its 14th Robert J. Lewis Pacesetter Award on July 13 from the Saint Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation, an agency of the U.S. Department of Transportation. SLSDC Administrator Betty Sutton presented the award to Zelko Kirincich, executive director and CEO of the port, during the semi-annual American Great Lakes Ports Association meeting held in Chicago.

Barclay: News of FitzPatrick Talks Should Propel PSC to Adopt Clean Energy Standards Quickly

Assemblyman Will Barclay released the following statement in support of the Public Service Commission’s new Clean Energy Standard in light of the news that Entergy and Exelon are in discussions to keep FitzPatrick operational. “I encourage the Public Service Commission to act quickly to adopt the newly proposed Clean Energy Standard. With the news today of Entergy in discussions with Exelon, it is critical that this newly proposed standard becomes the state’s new policy. Nuclear power supplies 30% of the state’s electricity with 17.9% of the power coming from Upstate.”

Leighton Principal Heading To Sunshine State

Superintendent Mark Porter, in a press statement, said he is pleased to announce his recommendation for the new principal at Poinciana Elementary School – Dr. Larry Schmiegel. He could start his new job as soon as July 18.

Tips to Beat the Heat – Health Department Wants You to Stay Cool

Heat-related deaths and illness are preventable, yet annually many people succumb to extreme heat. More people in the United States die each year from extreme heat exposure than from hurricanes, lightening, tornadoes, floods, and earthquakes combined. Daytime high temperatures are predicted to be in the 90s over the next several days in CNY. Forecasters predict that night-time temperatures will remain in the 70s and humidity will remain high.
With these conditions, the Oswego County Health Department recommends that everyone understand the warning signs of heat-related illness and take special care of those at risk.
