Pet of the Week – Sweet Pea

Sweet Pea is one of the Boylston Sweet 16, a group of cats rescued by the Oswego County Humane Society and United Friend of Homeless Animals after the roof of their house collapsed during the blizzard at the beginning of February. Like most of her housemates she is amazing – a beautiful long-haired tortie, sweet and friendly and perky.

Porky and Buddy Pet Health – Good News and Bad News

We told you that on February 3, the United States Department of Agriculture suddenly removed all inspection reports and other information from its website about the treatment of animals at federally licensed research laboratories, zoos, dog breeding operations (puppy mills) and other facilities. We urged you to complain vociferously about this unprecedented retreat from government transparency. On February 18, the USDA reposted some of the records.

Porky and Buddy Pet Health – Why Risk Heartache Of Adopting An Older Cat?

I have been reading about the rescue by the Oswego county Humane Society and Friends of Homeless Animals of the 16 cats that had been trapped in a house with a collapsed roof up in the town of Boylston. I sure do appreciate their efforts and I would be very interested in adopting one of them, but I read that almost half of them are 12 or 13 years old. Gulp. Isn’t it risky to adopt a cat that old?

Buddy and Porky Pet Health – Info Removed From USDA Website

We just learned that U.S. Department of Agriculture suddenly removed inspection reports and other information from its website about the treatment of animals at federally licensed research laboratories, zoos, dog breeding operations (puppy mills) and other facilities. The USDA cited court rulings and privacy laws for the decision. The removed documents will now be accessible only via Freedom of Information Act (FOIL) requests, a cumbersome, expensive and slow process at best.

Porky and Buddy Pet Health – February is Spay/Neuter Awareness Month

I just read that February is “Spay/Neuter Awareness Month!” Not exactly as catchy as Ground Hog Day or Valentine’s Day or the Super Bowl, but still, as an animal lover, it’s important to me. I always have my pets spayed or neutered, but I know that it’s a hard expense for some of my neighbors who really love their pets but don’t have much money to spare.

Porky and Buddy Pet Health – Dealing With Canine Bad Breath

My dog, Frou Frou, (he’s a Doberman, it’s a long story) has suddenly, like in the last week or so, developed bad breath – really stinky, disgusting bad breath. It’s not like he eats garbage or anything, but suddenly it’s more than I can stand just to let him sit on the couch with me. What should I do?

Pet of the Week – Autumn

Autumn was rescued after three years of fending for herself with the help of an elderly couple who kept her fed. When they had to leave for assisted living, some kind-hearted neighbors called us for help and we took her in. That’s when we found that she has an apparently chronic “sneezing” issue. She has been medicated, checked for polyps, but she still sneezes and snorts a bit, you know like a lot of humans with allergies.
