It isn’t going to be an easy road ahead for our hardworking farmers across Central and Northern New York as they continue to struggle with dry wells and look for ways to cope with the repercussions of the summer’s drought. That’s why, I’ve been working in recent months to ensure they have the support needed to rebound and continue to be part of New York State’s leading industry.
As chair of the Senate Agriculture Committee and someone who grew up on a family farm, I know that farming is hard work. That’s why I’m pleased to announce that funding is available for grants through a program I started, known as the New Farmers Grant Fund, which provides those just starting out in the industry with the support they need to be successful.
In an effort to say “thank you” to all who serve their country and let them know we are thinking of them throughout this special time of year, I will again be partnering with Ogdensburg native and radio personality Melody Burns in asking people to send yuletide greetings to soldiers through “Christmas Cards for Our Troops.”
As someone who has lived in the North Country her entire life, I know there’s nothing like the beauty and sense of community that exists in our region of the state. And while there are positives, we face a number of obstacles too. As co-chair of the Legislative Commission on Rural Resources, I’m working to address those challenges and identify ways to make this great part of our state even better.
It’s hard to believe that the end of summer is upon us and children and teachers are settling back into the classroom. As a mother and grandmother, I know that “back-to-school” isn’t just an exciting time; it’s also a time when we need to take extra steps to ensure children stay safe in the coming months.
Included among the tens of thousands of service men and women from our region are dozens of veterans across Oswego, St. Lawrence and Jefferson counties, who have defended our freedoms from wars and conflicts, many making the ultimate sacrifice and each with their own personal story of valor, bravery and heroism.
As we get older our health needs change, but often times our habits, some good and some bad, remain the same. That’s why we all need to recognize the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle, including eating the right foods, exercising and keeping our minds active and alert
From beautiful scenery to close knit communities, there are so many great things about living in a rural area. However, as someone who has spent her entire life living in Northern New York, I know that the rural regions of our state face a number of challenges, too.
Earlier this month, crews began conducting rabies “bait drops.” This unique effort, which is conducted by Cornell’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, utilizes low-flying planes to drop small packets containing a rabies vaccine, surrounded by a mixture of sugar, vegetable fat and other flavors, that are then consumed by animals, namely raccoons.
Today, our region is home to a number of wineries that boast some of the most refreshing, tastiest local beverages in the country, many of which have earned local, state and national awards. Our region is lucky enough to be home to two wine trails, the Thousands Islands-Seaway Wine Trail and the St. Lawrence County Wine Trail, which was created through legislation I sponsored in the Senate.
