Going into Saturday night, it had been since the 2000 race season since the name Mahaney had graced victory lane at the Fulton Speedway when Jim Mahaney won a Modified feature.

After just only a handful of starts in a new car and a new team, Gary Tomkins and car owner Duane “Deek” Decker put themselves in victory lane Friday night at the Brewerton Speedway.

Fulton native Robbie Schremp will play his pro hockey in Sweden this season.

Reports say he has signed with the club MODO of the Swedish Elite League.

Betsy Hayden has been hired as the new head coach for the Laker volleyball team. Hayden joins Oswego State after being hired in 2010-11 to direct the inaugural Wells College men’s and women’s volleyball seasons.

Coming into the 2011 season at the Brewerton Speedway, Tracey Road Equipment Big Block Modified pilot Matt Fink said he wanted a top-ten finish, or even better, a top-five finish at the “D-Shaped Dirt Demon” one of the toughest tracks in the entire Northeast to get a win against the best Big Block Modified drivers in the business.

Three days of roller derby action at the first-ever Triple-D Tournament literally came down to the last seconds, as the Oz Roller Girls rallied for a thrilling 130-126 win over the Ithaca Bluestockings to gain the title.

From the looks of it, this decade will mark the return of monster kings to Lake Ontario.  While 40-something-pound fish are nothing new–indeed, they were almost common in the last century–they’ve been as rare as whiskers on a trout for almost 20 years.
