GRANBY, NY – As Granby students hopped out of bed in the morning, they would be faced with an important choice.
Which free book will I pick today?
Granby Elementary School celebrated the importance of literacy with Reading Is Fundamental (RIF) Day held recently at the school.
On this special day, each student was to the given the opportunity to pick out a free book.
Classes lined the hallway outside of the library, one-by-one, throughout the day as hundreds of books were displayed on tables for students to choose from.
Volunteers from Granby’s Parent Teacher Group (PTG) were on hand to help distribute books, replenish titles and answer any questions.
Granby’s RIF Day is inspired by Reading Is Fundamental, Inc., a national non-profit organization that motivates children to read by delivering free books and literacy resources to those in need.
The essential elements of the RIF program is to encourage children’s literacy through family and community involvement, reading motivation and the excitement of getting to choose free books to keep.
Each year, a portion of the proceeds from the school’s Book Fair goes toward buying the RIF Day books that are given away to students.
