Do you have some sugar maple trees but unsure how to convert their sweet sap to the golden brown deliciousness of maple syrup? Do you come from generations of maple syrup producers looking for innovative ideas to improve your business? If you answered yes to either of those two questions, then Cornell Cooperative Extension of Oswego County has the workshop for you. Cornell Cooperative Extension of Oswego County will be sponsoring a workshop for maple syrup producers on February 20, 2010. The day is geared toward individuals who are looking for new technologies in producing maple syrup and maple products and individuals who have been producing syrup on a small-scale basis and looking to expand their operation. The goal is to improve the production and use of maple products by working with producers and others interested in this fascinating local product.
10 AM – “Maple Tubing Setup and Layout†– Steve Childs, NYS Maple Extension Specialist will discuss proper layout and setup of maple sap tubing systems for efficient transfer of sap from the tree to the evaporator.
11 AM – “Farmers Market Regulationsâ€Â- A representative from the NYS Department of Agriculture and markets will be on hand to discuss regulations of selling agricultural products and labeling requirements for farmers markets.
1 PM – “More Tips For Marketing†– Michele Ledoux, Executive Director, Cornell Cooperative Extension of Lewis County will highlight basic to complex ways to assist maple producers get their products to consumers. Many practical ideas and tips will be emphasized that producers can implement right away in their own businesses.
2 PM – “Turning Your Hobby Into a Profitable Business†– Jonathan Schell, Agriculture Team Coordinator, with Cornell Cooperative Extension of Oswego County will provide an overview of business planning, financing options, agriculture business considerations, labor, insurance, sap bush leases, and record keeping techniques for maple producers interested in expanding their business.
The workshop will take place on Saturday, February 20, 2010 running from 10 am to 3 pm at the Cornell Cooperative Extension office, 3288 Main Street, Mexico, NY. Cost of the workshop will be $15 per person. This cost will include materials for the day as well as lunch. Any one interested must pre-register no later than February 18, 2010.
