OSWEGO, NY – Theresa Familo, educational advocate for children with disabilities with Parents of Special Children, recently participated in a week-long training through Families Together in New York State in Syracuse to help the Fulton-based agency continue to serve children and their families throughout Oswego County with advocacy in education.
The Parent Empowerment Training is for individuals who work with parents of children with special needs focusing on three crucial areas of educational advocacy; the model for working with parents, skills and knowledge, and self-efficacy.
The number of families requesting education advocacy has doubled in the past six months at the agency.
Since attending the training, Familo noted, “The amount of resources, new skills and expanded spectrum of knowledge I have brought back to the families who need advocacy is proving to be a tremendous help.â€Â
Parents of Special Children is a 22-year-old not-for-profit community agency that also provides supportive services to families raising children and adults with disabilities.
Other services include respite care, reimbursement, assistance with special purchases and the Autism Connections group for families living with children with Autism.
The agency is supported by the New York State Office of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities.
