Americans with Disabilities Awareness Day is July 26

OSWEGO – The Oswego County Legislature recently designated July 26 as Americans with Disabilities Awareness Day to promote education about advocacy, resources and services available to county residents.

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990 guarantees that people with disabilities will have access to employment, public accommodations, transportation, services and telecommunications.

“As we celebrate the 22nd anniversary of this landmark piece of legislation, this is an opportunity for us to recognize the enormous contributions of ARISE in ensuring that these rights are acknowledged and protected through advocacy and education,” said Legislator John Proud, District 7, chairman of the Oswego County Legislature’s Health and Human Services Committee.

ARISE provides a wide variety of programs and services to people of all levels of ability and their families. This includes advocacy, training and support as well as housing, employment and recreation.

The presentation was made to Sabine Ingerson, director of ARISE in Oswego, along with staff members Kris Rabideau, Jim Cronk, and Kathy Mahar.

ARISE works with residents, businesses, public entities, and other community and advocacy groups to fulfill the promise of hope and freedom envisioned by the ADA and reaffirm the dignity, independence and self-worth of people with various levels of ability.
