OSWEGO, NY – The Professional Journalists and Communicators of Oswego County will welcome Andrea Bullard as guest speaker at its annual Muriel Allerton Scholarship Award Dinner to be held June 23, at 5 p.m. at Bridie Manor.
Born and raised in Oswego, Bullard graduated from Oswego High School and attended SUNY Plattsburgh to study mass communications.
A big part of getting her to Plattsburgh was their TV department.
Going into college, she had a resume reel from the work she was able to do in WBUC at the high school.
The advisors of the communications department were so impressed with the work she did, she was able to start taking sophomore classes as a freshman.
From there she made the most of her time and education getting a full time internship at WPTZ (NBC) as a senior.
Upon graduation, Bullard worked as a one-man band journalist for KEYC (CBS) in Mankato, Minn.
Every day she was out in the field solo getting interviews, putting together stories, writing and editing, all on a tight deadline.
After a little more than a year, she was offered a morning anchor job at WKTV in Utica.
After a year and half Syracuse came calling and she jumped at the chance to get even closer back home.
WSTM (NBC) brought her on as a weekend morning anchor and six months later she was holding down the main morning anchor chair.
After five years in the business and a lot of travel, Bullard decided to trade in her early mornings for a normal life.
In June, she signed on with Step One Creative, a full-service PR and marketing firm in her hometown, where she works with all avenues of media including web design, re-branding, and writing news releases.
In addition to the guest speaker, the highlight of the evening will be the presentation of the PJC’s Muriel Allerton Scholarship Award.
Given annually, the award is a $1,000 scholarship presented to a graduating senior from a high school in Oswego County who plans to major in a communications-related field in college.
Past recipients have included students who chose careers in print or broadcast journalism, public relations, advertising or graphic design.
Scholarship criteria include the interest applicants have demonstrated in their chosen field of study, as well as the aptitude and proficiency they’ve displayed during their high school career.
According to PJC scholarship chair Kelly Jordal, the club has received a number of qualified applicants and is looking forward to continuing the tradition of helping our youth who are truly interested in pursuing a career in this exciting and rewarding profession.
The award recipient will be honored and presented with a check at the PJC’s annual scholarship dinner meeting.
The scholarship dinner, which begins at 5 p.m., is open to the public.
A dinner buffet will be served and a cash bar will be available.
The cost is $17 for members and $19 for non-members.
