FULTON –  The Fulton Memorial Day Salute Committee has announced they will be holding a Watch Fire during this year’s Memorial Day Salute.  The fire will take place on Saturday, May 25, from 7:00 to 7:30 p.m. at Recreation Park in Fulton.

The Watch Fire is a ceremony in which retired and unserviceable U.S. flags are burned in a large wood pile in honor of U.S. soldiers and veterans.  It is considered the proper way to dispose of a flag.

The 60 for 60 The Mohawk Run, a local veterans’ support organization, will be assisting with this year’s event.  The community is invited to attend.  Flag collection boxes are located at the Fulton War Memorial, Fulton City Hall, Cayuga Street Steakhouse, Fulton VFW and the Fulton Polish Home.

The Fulton Memorial Day Salute is organized by Fulton’s four service clubs, the Kiwanis, Lions, Noon Rotary and Sunrise Rotary Clubs.  The theme for this year’s event is “Honor and Remember”.  In addition to the watch fire, the salute will feature the traditional parade, rides, entertainment, food, school poster contest, 5k run, and fireworks.
