‘Make History’ at Fort Ontario March 15

OSWEGO – Join Fort Ontario State Historic Site for its first “Make History” craft workshop! During this session, attendees will make an 18th-century style tie-on pocket. The workshop runs from 1 to 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 15 at the old stone fort, located at 1 E. Fourth St., Oswego.

The class will be guided by Fort Ontario Interpretive Program Assistant and historical seamstress Danielle Funiciello. Pre-cut kits and tools will be provided. Basic sewing skills are required.

Worn by men and women, tie-on pockets were accessible through a slit in the outer garment. Some women chose to wear theirs on the outside of their petticoats. In addition to learning how to make the pocket, attendees will be given historical examples of how pockets can be decorated at home.

The cost of the workshop is $10 to cover the cost of materials. Registration is required, as space is limited. Those interested should register by 4:30 p.m. on Friday, March 14. Call Fort Ontario at 315-343-4711 to reserve your spot.

Fort Ontario will host another “Make History” craft workshop centered on basic tin-smithing on Saturday, April 12. More details will follow.
